Mac pro with this Seagate FreeAgent Desk ST310005FJA105-RK 1 TB External USB/FireWire Hard Drive for Mac. when the MacPro boots up, it does not see the external HDD ... it is attached via FW 800. The only way I can get the HDD to mount is to unplug the power cord, pause, and plug it in. It then mounts. This should mount when the machine powers up. The drive lights up when the Mac starts up but will not automatically mount.
help?

Hi there,
Yes you can just take the hard drive out of the case, can use it with any other case, you can also just put it inside your computer and connect it to the sata cable :)
Heres a case you could use for your drive... Click Here

Many thanks

If you load the Free Agent Software, there is a utility for setting the power saving. You can set it to a number of different times including never. The default is 15 minutes. I think this is what you are experiencing. The settings are in the Utilities tab.

There is software preloaded on the disk. If you have AutoPlay turned off in your system, it won't start automatically when you connect the drive. Just go to MyComputer and open the drive and you will find a setup file there to install the backup software (I think it's called Launch.exe).

There is about a 40% failure rate on these drives which is extremely high. The problem is a error in the onboard bios. If it is still working you can apply a update that will fix it. If it has "bricked" or locked up then you are out of luck. You can try to return it under warrenty. If you have important data on the drive then you may need the services of a data recovery company to get it off ie $$$ to do.

the problem is that your western digital operates using the NTFS (New Technology File System) which is the standard file system of Windows. Apple macs is not interopable with native NTFS therefore you need to install a read-write NTFS file-system driver on your mac.
an excellent free mac NTFS driver can be found here-
http://mac.softpedia.com/get/System-Utilities/NTFS-3G.shtml
download and install the software then restart your mac.
