Any external USB hard drive that uses a 3.5" hard drive (the larger drives they use in desktops) will work. These all come with an external power adapter you must plug into the wall.

The external hard drive units that use the smaller 2.5" hard drives are the ones they use in laptops. These require much less power, and can be powered by the PC's USB port although some do come with an optional power adapter. However the Dish receiver does not send enough power to its USB port to power the hard drive, which is why the tech told you to get one that has an external power supply.

Even then the DVR uses a drive format that your computer may not recognize. I don't know if there are tools out there that will let you connect a hard drive from a DVR, read and convert the TV shows stored there.

Another option is to buy a DVD recorder. This is like a VCR, only it uses a DVD disc and not a video tape. Connect the DVD recorder to the outputs on the DVR, and then set the DVD recorder so it will record from its input. (on my DVD recorder this is "IN2")

Put a blank DVD into the DVD recorder, start playing a show on the DVR, and hit record on the DVD recorder. When the show is finished, hit stop on the DVD recorder to stop recording. The advantage here is you can then play this DVD on any DVD drive. The disadvantage is DVD recorders only record in non-HD. You can still play a show in HD, but the recording you get won't be in HD. Also, the show has to record in real time. So if it's a 60 minute episode, it will take 60 minutes to record.

How do I transfer recorded movies to a external hard drive?

That depends. What device did you use to record these movies? If you recorded a movie using a DVD recorder, connect your external hard drive to a PC device which has a DVD rom. Go into the files, copy and past the file to your external drive.

Dish Dvr 612.. I accidently deleted my recordings. How do I recover

esriniv

If you have deleted your recordings from your 612 receiver, there is not a way to retrieve those recordings. To prevent this from happening in the future, you can connect an external hard drive to the receiver and transfer the recordings to the external hard drive. I have provided a link with more information about an external hard drive. I hope this helps.

Are there drivers available to download from a VN-480-PC to a MAC? Or any other way to transfer file format to work on a MAC? Thanks! Tony

Hi

the voice recorder should work instantly when plugged into the mac, it should show up as a removable stroage device, or a removable drive, like any other external hard drive or usb stick would on a mac.

you don't need a driver to transfer or listen to the recordings from the recorder on a mac.

Tech support tells me hard drive failed. but I need valuable recordings off the drive. How do I get that?

Hello, this is Matthew Gonzales with DISH Network. If the hard drive on the receiver is faulty, there is no way we can guarantee the recordings would be able to be transferred off the receiver. However, if you wish to back up recordings in the future, you can hook up an external hard drive to the unit, it is a one time $40 fee to activate the service on the account. With an external hard drive, you can transfer your recordings from the receiver to the EHD, that way in the future if the receiver goes bad, you have the recordings on the external hard drive. Hope this helps.

Recovery of content on DVR-625 hard drive

usually hard drive failure boils down to files not opening succesfully, or a random internal failure, not a physical issue with the hard drive, however because dish network repairs these issues on a large scale the fix is to wipe the software and start over which means all recordings are lost, unfortunately recovering these recordings is basically impossible... if you often record things which are imperative to your business i would suggest getting a 622/722 dvr which will allow you to download these recordings to an external hard drive via usb, you will have unlimited use uploading and downloading programs for a one time fee of about 40$

Make sure that all memory resident software is turned off on your comptuer including any anti virus software.

If you have a secondary hard drive on your computer use that instead of the C drive.

Defrag your hard drive. This way you video will be save as a continous file on your hard drive rather than having it being saved into little pieces.

Make sure that the Dazzle drivers are updated as well.

The important thing is to shut down all memory resident programs and defrag your hard drive.
