First thing is use a hair drier, If you had a air compressor that may be the best. unplug it take out batteries right away. Place what ever you have over something warm. in the sum just don'nt forget to bring it in. Do not plug it in for 3 days if still sealed like a phone. you must have heat over 110 degrees for water to evaporate. A watch on your had will only dy out if you wear if for a few days. Leave the watch down on dreser for a few days, you will loose it to corossion because a lot of water like a drop in a watch needs heat to evaporate it out of the tiny crakes in electronics. Water will normally short electronics out right away. Only thing I know that survives a lot of water from storms or spills are radios.

the get closer to base message displays when you are too far from the phone's docking station. It could be as simple as replacing the battery with a new one from radio shack or such electronic places. But then again I don't know if it was damaged, dropped, or got wet, so this is my most reasonable solution.
Normally after drying out, It should work, If its not tho, you will prob be better off replacing it... If you have a nice one, With built in Answering machine and all that, check to see if its expandable, If so then just buy a expandable headset as a replacement, That way you keep the same phone system, get a new phone, and it works as good if not better than your old one.
Try unplugging it and opening it up and gently blow drying it and try to avoid getting it too hot. Let me know how this goes and if it doesn't stop, then please let me know the make and model of the machine.
