the frame is not differnt on the 1996 to 1997 they are intercangeable i just put a trans from a 1999 durango in my 1500 matched up great except the shift linkage is differnt but if you keep your old linkage you will be fine
the part numbers are totally different between the 2 yrs....its almostn imposible to determine....you may contact a wrecking yard they may have another way to determine if they interchange
