Dear Sir/Madam,
The Plasma TV started to show the following symptom about 2 weeks after the 1 year warranty expires :-< :-< :-<:
The bottom half of the screen is totally black.
I contacted Samsung support and they asked me to do reset:
1. Turn off the TV.
2. unplug the power cable.
3. push the power button 3 times.
4. wait 15 minutes.
5. plug back in the cable.
6. Turn on the TV.
That steps worked like a champ the 1st time I did it. But then after a few days, the symptom comes back, and the reset procedure no longer works.
I again called Samsung support and this time (knowing that reset procedure above doesn't work), they suggested me to get people to fix my TV with charges .....
Do you know any solution that I can do myself. I'm an hardware engineer (computer and electrical engineer) so I'm not intimidated to fix the TV if there is instructions ...
Thanks in advance ...
PS: "Tapping" on the side of the TV (left and right) does not seem to help. Unplugging the component cables does not help either.
I have a solution. My Samsung plasma had the same problem with the bottom half of the screen being black. Follow these directions and it will not cost you a dime, just some time. I took the back panel of the tv. I found the lower buffer board on the left hand side. I disconnect all the ribbon cables. Use an air cleaner to spray out any dust on the ribbon connection and the board. I connect the ribbons back to the board. My plasma is now as good as new. If you have issue with the top portion, do the same with the upper buffer board. I was going to buy a new tv but I'm glad I gave this a shot first. It's been almost a month and it's still working fine. Hope this helps and hope it saves you some money.
I have the same problem. I did not purchase this Samsung myself. My insurance company purchased it to replace a 42" Gateway I had that was stolen. (By the way - loved my Gateway). This is the first and only Samsung TV I will ever have. I'm typically a Sony buyer, so I guess once I can't take this any longer I'll replace it. For now I keep a basket of stuffed toys next to the couch and toss them at the TV and that seems to fix the problem. Good Luck everyone with this POC>
It does sound a lot like a buffer board problem, Just which one is the question. Sometimes it is in fact a connection issue. But 1/2 of the screen missing sounds like maybe connection between the 2 buffer boards. It could possibly be the panel. If that is the case. ITs over for that set. But i would suggest first calling samsung and asking them to extend the warranty for 90 days or so. Sometimes they will do this for nice customer such as yourself. 1-800-SAMSUNG. Let me know how this turns out first then we can proceed further if needed. Good luck and keep me posted. Sincerely Jay
Thanks for the suggestion.... It is actually what I did. It took a while, but I argued with Samsung that since I bought my set in December 2005, and the problem with the connections was acknowledged by them in November 2005, they sold me a TV that they knew had a potential problem. After being rejected and told they would not extend the warrenty, I called back and escalated. They agreed to provide the parts at no cost and I had to pay labor (turned out to be $200) to have them installed. This was done about two weeks ago. I have not decided yet whether to try and pursue a reimbursement for the labor at this point or not. I figured I had better have the repair done before I argued further and they changed their mind on paying for the parts.
Just for information sake, before the repair, I was still having intermittent problems with the bottom half going blank, but just a little gentle tap would restore the picture. I had to decide whether to live with a minor annoying problem, or spend the $200 to get $800 worth of parts installed. I have now probably spent a little less than what an extended warrenty would have cost when I first bought the set.

I have the same problem on a 42 inch HP-R4252. My set is almost 2 years old, so out of warrenty. I called Samsung.... and they kind of acknowledged that they had heard of the problem, and that it was always the bottom half of the screen... but then said they really had not heard much in the way of this problem occurring.... I have a service call for it later this week...
I have more information.... Looks like a SAMSUNG problem that they are not really acknowledging. Check out their service bulletin ASC20060303001 dated 03/03/2006 for HPR4252 and HPR5052.
Subject: change of connectors between Y-Main and Bullfer.
The connectors between the Y-Main Board and the Y-Buffer boards have been changed during November 2005 production to reduce loose connection problem.
What it means for us as owners is a HUGE expense. I had a TV technician come out and look at my set. He discovered this bulletin when he was looking at replacing the lower buffer board to resolve my problem. To actually resolve this problem with parts and labor will cost over $1000. I don't believe I am going to do that. It looks like I don't actually have a bad board (because the problem is intermittent)... just factory bad connectors... The repairman suggested not fixing the set, but said if I got a new TV, take the back off the old one and try reseating the boards. He did not advise doing it until after getting a new set, because it could make it worse. He also suggested tapping the side of the set when the problem occurs as this might help jiggle the connection enough to make the problem go away again for a while. Interestingly, although I have not watched much TV since this occurred last Friday, since I put the set back up on the wall, I have not had a problem with it...... but as they say, "problems that go away by themselves come back by themselves....."
Have the same problem, except the left half of the screen is completely black as opposed to the bottom. I just had it delivered yesterday from best buy. This is terrible! I'm sure my next few days will be a headache trying to return it! Any suggestions???
I have the same problem but with a 42" version that is now past 2 years old. It started out a couple of months ago and has escalted. First I got the a strange picture distortion effect that some times turned the whole screen black. This happend just once a week. A few weeks ago the effect only affected the bottom half. Still it sometimes turns completly black. Tapping the backside helps but sometimes just for a minute and sometimes for a couple of hours.
When the problems were less frequent I called the support who sent the case to a repair shop but the technician had the tv for 3 weeks and couldnt find anything wrong. When i got it back it worked flawlessly for a few weeks but then it started again and now its worse than ever. No warranty left but Im thinking of contacting support again just to air my frustration and since I hope they saved my case from earlier they can do something about it.
tv is fine for the first 20mins, When it heats up that's when half of the bottom screen goes black. It comes up then goes again the more its on the longer it says up. The tv is 2yrs old and am ready to toss it out, It has put me off samsung for life and has encouraged me to pay for a 3yr cover.
I could gamble and pay for someone to look at it but just for the call out its£95....mmmm I think its for the bin
