That typically happens as a result of an application update that either downloaded an incorrect version of the application for the device, or the application update didn't complete before the device was removed, or the application it downloaded was somehow corrupt.

Try deleting any application updates that were downloaded into HOME, then delete the application from the device, then download the new application update for your device, and install it to the device. Give it a good wait after it says it has finished installing the application update and then be sure to use the software eject button within HOME before disconnecting the drive.

Otherwise, you probably have a call to TT support in your future where they will likely have you download a utility to clear the flash on the drive and reinstall the app on the device after that

If you left it in a hot car then the data has been corrupted, which will result in the same display. Whilst most GPS units will withstand average heat in a car, direct sunlight through a windscreen is murder! It has been known to distort the cases of GPS and destroy SD CF cards

TomTom GPS battery discharge when off

With the TomTom GPS units, if you use it infrequently, you may often find the unit has a dead battery when you go to use it.
This is because turning the Tom Tom off normally with the power button doesn't actually turn it off fully, but instead puts it in a standby mode.
Even though the screen is off and it appears to be shut down, it's still using some power to maintain configuration settings.

If you know you won't be using it for a long period of time, you can press the reset button on the bottom of the unit (this can be done while it's off), and it should put it in shutdown mode, where the battery will not be drained so rapidly. If you do this, you can confirm it's in the shutdown mode by tapping the on button. This normally will power up the Tom Tom, but in the shutdown mode, it will not do anything. To wake it up from the shutdown mode, press and hold the power button for a few seconds, at which point it should turn on and greet you with the Tom Tom drums. It takes quite a while to boot up from this mode, which is probably why they defaulted to the suspend mode instead of a true "OFF" state.

For some of the newer units, they've omitted the reset button, so the process is a little different. Instead of pressing the reset button, do the following:
with the unit on, press and hold the power button. The shutdown screen should appear, but continue holding down the power button for another 12 seconds after the screen turns off. Timing is a bit touchy, because if you hold it too long, it'll end up just rebooting, and then you'll have to try again.
If you're successful in the shutdown, you can test it by briefly pressing the power button. It shouldn't turn back on with just a short press. If it comes on with the tap on the power button, you'll have to try again.

This whole process is a bit of a hassle, and extends the turn on time greatly, so you'll want to plan ahead when doing this, and just shut off normally if you expect you'll be using it within a couple days. However, the long boot up is preferable to having a completely dead unit when you need it, especially if you're away from a power plug...

Red flashing X...gps device doesnt work

This means that there is a problem with the internal memory. You will need Tomtom home for this so if you do not already have it, you can get it here: http://www.tomtom.com/services/service.php?id=16&tab=87
Go into Tomtom home and select update and it should update your software to the newest one and get your unit back working normal. If it says your unit is already up-to-date, then open your unit in my computer and copy the main folders from the unit onto the computer unless you have made a previous back-up in Tomtom home Then delete all of the folders that you copied from the unit off of the unit once you have made sure all of them are on your computer. Then update your unit from Tomtom home and it should work like normal. Make sure you have your maps backed up or you might lose them.

Have tomtom sat navs got built in memory if so how do you get back in to read them

Connect your Tom Tom using the supplied USB lead. The lead is a USB 'A' lead to USB Mini 'B' lead.

Once you have connected the Tom Tom the unit will ask if you wish to connect to the computer and you press Yes. The unit then appears as another drive if you double click on My Computer.

BE VERY CAREFUL not to delete or alter any files on the Tom Tom unit unless you know exactly what you are doing otherwise it could result in the Tom Tom unit not working any more.

Memory card does not work

Is this a new unit? How long have you had it?

I had one for 6 months and had to return it to the store because it stopped locking onto satellites. It sounds like the hardware fault. Did you try the reset button? It returns it to its default factory settings.

Spare head 2.
