How auto focus - Olympus E-400 - digital camera

Depending on your lens, you may have an AF/MF switch. Make sure it's set to AF for Auto Focus. Try increasing your light levels. Does focus work in a good light setting?

You should have a button that looks like a matrix. Press this button to set your focus point. Use the joy-stick like wheel to select the focus point. Press it to select Auto Focus points.

Make sure the auto-manual focus switch on your camera is set to auto (A) and also make sure the auto manual focus selector on the lens is in auto (A) as well. If your lens contacts are dirty then this will affect the function of the lens as well. Clean those with either a lint free type cloth and alcohol or methylated spirits.

On the front of the camera body, below the lens release button you should find a two position switch labeled "AF" & "M" This is the "Auto Focus - Manual" selector switch. Make sure the selector is set to "AF" for auto focusing.

Your lens may have a similar focus selector switch on its barrel. There are two types of switches used - depending on the lens. The first is labeled "M/A" and "M" The "M/A" position indicates it is in "Auto Focus" mode with a "Manual" focus over ride capability. You can simply twist the focus ring to change the focus to a point other than that chosen by the camera's auto focus system. The "M" position is Manual Focus mode. No focusing operations will be performed by the D80 auto focus system - focusing must be done by the photographer.

The second type has "A" & "M" positions. These represent Auto and Manual focus. The difference between this type switch and the "A/M & "M" switch is that when in "A", the camera will no allow the focus to be changed manually. There will be opposition to twisting the focus ring in the position. Forcing it will likely result in damage. The selector switch must be changed to "M" to change the focus.

If either switch is set to manual, the auto focus system will be disabled, so it is very important to have them both set to "A" or "A/M".

Auto focus for an for digital cameras have a nasty habit of that, do what I do, and my Auto Focus works too, but I use Manuel focus all the time, and I shoot professional golf....I never auto focus nothing....my eye is faster and better than the lens.

If it's in continuous auto-focus and doing it, then it is just not locking on to one thing and jumping back and forth between two objects that are very close together in distance and it is normal. It should stop in manual, single shot or single point auto-focus. Sony uses Nikon auto-focus technology and my D-300 with a 70-200mmf2.8 will do it if I turn the auto-focus tracking time(lock-on) all the way down with the auto-focus in full auto.

It depends on how long you have owned the camera, but I find it doubtful that it would be waring out. Sometimes after messing with the auto focus buttons my camera no longer focuses on its own, I then reset the settings and re-select auto focus. This always fixes my problem. Auto focus is supported with AF-S and AF-1 lenses only.
A mode switch is on the lens ,it should be in A position to activate auto focus.
In the menu select auto focus

I had the same problem. My issue was with all my lenses. I solved it by going to the menu and selecting the custom setting menu (pencil icon). Then from the right menu select the AE-L/AF-L and press OK. Then make sure it is set on AE/AF Lock. Presto...all my lenses worked on auto-focus.

Follow These Simple Steps To Set The Manual Focus 1. Set the power switch to CAMERA mode. 2. Turn the MENU DIAL up or down until the FOCUS is highlighted and then press the ENTER button. M. FOCUS(MF) will display. 3. Turn the MENU DIAL up or down until the object is in focus. Zoom out a little if focusing is difficult. 4. To return to AF (Auto Focus: ), press the ENTER button again.

There are four focus modes: S-AF (Single auto focus), C-AF (Continuous auto focus), MF (Manual Focus), and S-AF/MF (Simultaneous mode). (SINGLE Auto Focus): Focusing is performed once when the shutter button is pressed halfway. C-AF (CONTINUOUS Auto Focus): The camera repeats focusing while the shutter button is pressed halfway. (MANUAL FOCUS): The function allows you to manually focus on any subject while looking through the viewfinder. SIMULTANEOUS USE of S-AF mode and MF mode: You can fine-adjust focus manually by turning the focus ring after AF is performed in the S-AF mode.
