How to repair the front left wheel and height adjustment assembly on a Kirby G10 vacuum cleaner

The front wheels are fixed to an axle and held in place by a grooved section at each end. However, there does not seem to be a means to stop the wheel from sliding off the axle. I would expect to find a nut or locking mechanism, but it appears that the assembly relies on friction? It is possible that a part has been lost, but even if it has, there does not seem to be a place for a locking nut or something similar.

How do you fix height adjustment on Hoover vaccum?

This is a little joke that Hoover has played, and for some reason no one else has explained it. (One answer hints at it, but doesn't explain at all.) The height adjuster does NOT operate when the vacuum is in the upright & locked position. The tabs for the adjuster won't go into the holes above them until the vacuum is unlocked and at a slight angle. You can just install the height adjuster wheel assembly in the locked position, replace the lower cover, and voila! you will be able to adjust the height with the vacuum angled as it is for use. That's an hour of my life I won't get back!

The wheels fell off.

The wheels are held to the axles with small c-clips. Perhaps these have come loose. If the wheel is still attached to part of the axle. The axle has broken and will need replacement.

My rear wheels keep poppping off. I've hammered and glued, but they won't stay on. Do I need new wheels or a new axle assembly?

Greetings,

You may need to just purchase the the little c-clips that hold the wheels onto the axle. Kirby Vacuums actually have a hub cap on their rear wheels that can be removed to access the axle end with the c-clip. If you take a flat head screwdriver, and pry off the plastic part of the wheel off of the rubber part, you should be able to see the end of the axle. There should be a little tiny c-clip at the end of the axle that holds the rear wheel in place. Is that clip there on both sides?

If yes, then you may need to replace the entire axle assembly. If they are missing these clips are available for purchase through many online websites including our own, govacuum.com.

If this repair didn't fix your Kirby, please contact me, I'm happy to try and diagnosis this further with you. If it did help, please rate the repair as helpful, thank you.

The spring goes inside that pedal that you step on to advance the height. Place that spring in that pedal and then place the pedal into its' groove, then put the axile and wheel assembly over the pedal and put your screws back into the mounting sections.

The back wheel came off and i went to put it back on and the other wheel that connects to the mechinism/gear height ajustment that goes up/down with a spring in it came off as well. i have been looking for...

You do not need schematics, it is fairly easy. Clean and lubricate the teeth on the inside of the front wheel shaft assembly. Insert the spring into small pedal and place the pedal designated opening on the Kirby front fan casing with teeth facing out. Then take the wheel shaft assembly and put it over those teeth and onto the fan casing. Use two clamps and 2 screws to attach the shaft to the fan case. Need any parts - go HERE.

Kirby vacuum height adjuster is stuck in high

Remove the nozzle and remove the front wheel shaft. Take these 2 screws out.

When doing so - watch for the spring that is under the top pedal, do not let it fly out of window. If you will find that shaft is bent buy and install a new shaft (you can find all parts HERE). You may try to straighten it but usually it doe not last long - wheel ***** falls off and you have to buy new shaft anyway. If shaft seems to be ok - clean old grease and dirt, lubricate well the pedal teeth and assemble everything back. This should solve the problem. Occasionally spring may be broken but this happens very rarely.

Good Luck,

Replacing spring in wheel height adjustment

I just solved the problem. Go to this website: http://www.completevac.com/kirby_schemo_5.html
It will show you where the spring goes (left side inside the ratchet - when you remove the ratchet you will see that it is hollow. That's where the spring goes!) and a good picture of that assembly
