Unknown disc on philips ht9150/98

Unknown disc

Thanks for yr advice. I was able to play any DVD before. I bought a DVD from the store which is a region 3 and it showed unknown disc. Thereafter, all DVD showed unknown disc including those that were ok. I've sent it back to Philips for diagnostic. Was told it could be the board issue and replacement is not worth it. Such a disappointment. It's a 2012 product that is still on sale.

I have a lesser Philips system and have run into this error, there are a couple of things that can cause this that I know of:

Dirty discs can be misread. I usually just run it through water and wipe clean with a cotton rag to see if it helps.

If you player is only for DVD, it will not read Bluerays.

If the disc is a DVD, check the region. I have read some players will detect all regions, but many will only detect region 1 (United Stated).

Another possibility is NTSC versus PAL. You will find NTSC in (United States), but if you buy you disc online / used, it could be Pal.

Lastly, If these are not the cause you might want to try updating the firmware, Philips is pretty good about providing updates on their website. Come to think of it, the original problem I had with this error went way after one of these firmware updates. I thought the error might have been heat related, but has not come up again since.

Did you try another disc?
Try other discs - preferably store bought. If it will not recognize store bought discs then you have a defective unit.

Is the "unknown" disc home made? could be that the homemade disc has not been created properly or is a type of disc that the unit cannot read.

Philips Blu Ray Model HTS3541/F7 Unknown Disc error

Check with an other known good disc. If it shows the same for that disc too, its laser pickup unit has the fault, and should be replaced. Contact any experienced service technician. Replacing laser pickup assembly to blu-ray players are a very very skilled work. http://electronicshelponline.blogspot.com/

All disc recorded on the recorder now say unknow disc

Take the disk out, power off, and on again. If it still says "unknown disc type" instead of "no disc," the internal disk drive is the problem. You can try to clean the sensor, but there is a good chance the drive needs to be replaced. I have a Philips DVDR3400 that did the same thing. I bought a regular computer internal drive, connected the power supply and IDE cable, and it now works.

thanks.

Dvd player gives unknown disc

thats because its region locked..do the following:

start the player without any DVD in it.
open the lid.
while the lid is open press 9,9,9,9,0
you should see region 0 displayed.
close the lid.

Your DVD player is now region free.

note:
replace 0 with 1 to 6 at to set the wanted region number if needed.
do let me know if it worked.
