Tracking a subject is one thing but, taking an action picture is something else altogether. You will need to set the ISO to a higher number to force the shutter to set a faster speed stop the action.

Obviously, shooting the pics at night requires a longer exposure. If you haven't changed any settings from your daylight pics, then your camera is probably setting a slower shutter speed to compensate for less light in the stadium. You need to raise the ISO setting. You could get a faster lens, experiment with both aperture priority and shutter proiority, etc. But try the ISO first...that may do the trick.

More likely you don't have enough light for clear photos. There's not too much you can do about this, since you probably can't add more light to the stadium or arena and the action is too far away for your flash.

Since the low light is going to force a rather slow shutter speed on you, you need to stabilize the camera. Use a tripod or monopod. That won't stop the athletes from blurring, but at least the setting will be sharper. Alternatively you can try panning with the motion, freezing the athlete and blurring the background.

A faster lens will get you a couple of additional stops, but as such lenses can cost $2000 and more, unless you're taking pictures for Sports Illustrated...

I take it you are after night shots.

Assuming that's the case, then your camera relies of the capabilities of the flash and that's invariably about 2-3 metres.

If you're shooting in good daylight, then the hightest ISO setting will give sharper pictures when movement is and issue.

Shutter speed is too slow. Usually when you try to take pictures indoors early morning or at night games under lights. The ability too shoot action in low light cost $4,000 - $8,000 minimum. Google "Nikon D3" and "Nikkor 200mm f2.0" you'll get the idea.

The sport setting uses a faster shutter speed to stop motion. However, if you have the ISO set to a low number and try to take action shots in dim light, they will be blurry. Either use auto ISO or use a higher number such as 400 or 800.

To take night photo's you need to use a tripod. this will enable you to take long exposures without the blur. If you use flash it will only illuminate objects near the camera.

Check to see what the setting is for Image Size (I have sony cybershot DSC-w50). On the camera itself, it is the button on the bottom. My camera was on the 8"x10" size and I was getting blurry shots (especially with people in them). I switched it to the 4x6 print size and it seems to be much clearer.

Depending on how long you have had the camera - Nikon may come up with a free solution. Contact Technical Support at Nikon. The auto focus is not functioning as it should. Do make sure you are not covering any 'Windows' on the front of the camera when taking, shots.
