This can be an aggravating problem with a simple solution. There are keyways on each axle shaft, and what oldtimers call a Woodruff key. That's the piece of metal that forces the wheels to turn with the axle. Try tightening the locknuts. If that doesn't work they can be replaced easily.

Hi Connie. The ticking noise could be several things. First, I would suggest you try tightening the lug nuts holding on the wheels. While they may seem tight, unless they are very, very tight, you can get a metallic sounding click from them...do both sides. If that doesn't work, the clicking sound may be coming from the tire bead-to-rim area on the wheels. When the tires are installed, they use an adhesive to secure the tire to the rim. After many miles and bumps, you break a spot at the rim and there will be a noise made on that tire every time you roll over it. You can try spraying some WD-40 on both the inside and outside of the rim/tire junction, drive it and see if that is the source. If you have driven your power chair over an unstable surface(wet grass, mud, gravel, sand etc.) and it has gotten stuck, or nearly stuck, you may have over-amped the motor trying to get loose, and this is damage that can only be repaired by a motor replacement. It shouldn't be a deal-killer, as the chair will still operate, just annoying until the motor quits. If you have the chair through insurance(medicare, etc.) they will pay for the repair. The electric brake shouldn't be ticking/clicking at all, unless there is something caught in it, and this is pretty hard to do. The brake is either on or off. When you hit the joystick, you will hear it click to unlock, and click again to lock when you release the joystick.
good luck!
Testimonial: "Thanks for you help. I haven't gotten the chair stuck. I dont have any insurance on this chair. We will go through all of your suggestions."
Connie, a new motor is going to be very expensive, and a pain in the rear to replace. Since the chair is old, it would probably be a better idea to replace it with a new, used model. I have bought nearly new ones off of Craig's list for $400-$600, which is a lot cheaper than a new motor. You may need to replace the batteries if the chair you are looking at has been sitting off the charger for too long, as the onboard computer drains them down and kills them. A set(2) of sealed U-1 batteries ordered online should run about $150.00-$170.00 for the AGM type, and slightly higher for the gel batteries.

Strictly a guess but I think it is the e-brake. I had similar issue. Tried new remote but continued. Eventually it caused the right motor to act as if it is "uncoiling" and abruptly locked up. When it does this the remote claims it is a connection problem but all connections appear to be ti
Thanks! I noticed today when going down the hill, if I stop and back up it seems to correct itself for awhile. Thank you for the tip!
We are going to replace the motor. Nothing else has worked so far. Thanks for all of your help! This is an old chair and we have everything else that was suggested first. Thanks everyone!
