on page 31 it shows you how to reset your gps. I would also go ahead and do any updates they have available for your unit there is also a link to that on page 31.
Using the nmea output from your GP-31 to the nmea input on the VHF. Enable the GLL Sentence and make sure the port is set for nmea0183. Remember hooking nmea up it's positive to positive and neg to neg. Once that is done and you have a fix you should have lat and long on your vhf.
Positive Lat Lon coordinates are for the eastern and northern hemispheres respectively. If you have a negative coordinate, they indicate a location in the western or southern hemisphere.
To enter a Latitude coordinate of, for example, -31 degrees, you would enter 31 degrees, but specify S (for South) rather than N (for North)
Negative Lon coordinates would use W (for West) instead of E (for East)
