Sure you can, and it is pretty simple. First off, you want to remove the bezel that is between the F keys and the monitor hinges. There may be a little screw on the back side of each hinge cover, and also under the battery if the battery is below the hinges. Once you pry the bezel off, you can remove the little screws that are under the round covers on the glass side of the monitor. There should be 4 or 6 of them located on the monitor bezel. Once you remove these, you can separate the bezel on the glass side from the back of the monitor. There may be 2 or 4 screws that hold the LCD to the hinges that will have to be removed. Now you will be ready to unplug the monitor from both the motherboard and the inverter. Replace the new LCD in the reverse order.
New LCD's can be purchased from Ebay at a reasonable cost.

you can try adjusting the screen brightness manually by pressing the blue FN key plus the up/down arrow keys. brighter is FN+UP ARROW. if you have a program called quickset open that and there should be an option under power options/settings. if neither of those solutions fixes the problem then the problem is the screen. a geek squad (1-800-geek-squad) will repair or replace the screen for you. thank you for using fixya!

it depends on if the exisiting invertor is fine or not. If the panel is being replaced because it was cracked etc, then the chances are the invertor is fine and will not need replacing. Obviously if you don't get the same replacement panel that Dell originally used, then you may have to buy a different invertor & figure out the wiring connections to attach it to the motherboard.

Try and determine what is wrong with your LCD screen first and you can then decide the best course of action. Follow these instructions to determine the fault and then check out LCD Parts WEB site for parts, replacement LCDs, service and DIY info..
You may have a faulty inverter or loose power inverter connection. OR
You may have a defective CCFL backlight, it may have the following symptom: Screen flashs on red/pink and off. Picture stays on in red and slowly be come normal. Picture flickering with dim display or appear black. Picture flickering on and off. All these symptoms indicate that the LCD backlight lamp (CCFL Lamp) has reached the end of the life and all you need to do is replacing the CCFL lamp.
Connect an external monitor to your laptop and power the monitor up first then the laptop, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is definitely the backlight. Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight and it could be the inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out or burnt out, most likely this is the case.
The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills.
