I have a Panasonic SA-PT850.
I have a 160Gb Hard disk, formatted FAT32 with MP3s on it which I plug into the USB port.
The mp3s play fine, except that at the bottom of the directory tree list, there are several corrupt entires, and I think some directories are missing from the display.
The filesystem is fine when checked with chkdsk.

I assume you have the manual. I found it very difficult to follow, very poor. While "on hook" enter the number you want to call. Press "store" or "enter". Enter the name referring to the graphics chart on pages 7 & 8. It is set up for Alpha characters and it depends on which software is installed on your phone. Example: If you want the letter "A" you press the number 2 one time. If you want the number "2", you have press "2" seven times to display the number 2. Use the toggle key to move to the next letter or number you want to enter. When you have finished press "Store". It may take awhile but that's how its done. Not a very good system for the average consumer in my opinion. But that's how its done. I was unable to upload the manual. HDD ERR is quite a serious error, as it means there is a hardware problem with the internal disk drive. You could try switching off the unit and disconnecting the mains cable overnight, and trying again, but really this will need to be a call to an engineer.
If your unit is still in warranty call them now to arrange a fix. To find your local warranty centre, go to your regional Panasonic website, and look under Customer Support

Hi me2you
Your machine is not reading the disc. This can be caused for several reasons. The cd players lens may have a film of dust preventing it from reading. Try a lens cleaner CD. This is about the only thing you can do without getting into the internals of the unit. If you are electronically savvy, I can talk you through some more diagnostics, but generally this will mean replacing parts to fix the unit. If the Lens cleaner does not fix the problem, you may need to take the unit to a Panasonic repair guy for a quote. .

THIS HELPED A BUNCH!! Thank you so much, this unlocked the trays for us. We wound the "gear" (about and inch and a half in there) till the disc loader was copletely risen - and DVD player has returned from the dead.

"I've just spent the last 3 nights trying to fix that same issue with my sa-ht670 player. I ended up pulling out the dvd tray assembly, and making sure there wasn't anything broken inside or obstructing other pieces. Come to find out, my 1 year old had pulled on one of the trays and it pulled the tray off it's tracks. After that, it would just go to "init please wait" forever. I pulled the side track cover off and aligned the tracks manually. Everything had to be absolutely perfect or else you'd get nothing. After the fact, I realized that there were two holes in the bottom of the player that you can take a spare small gear (which is attached to the plastic cover on top of the dvd tray assembly) and stick it in there and manually adjust the tray positions to make sure everything is aligned properly. After messing with it three days, it ended up being quite simple to fix. Everything works like a charm now. If you need details, feel free to email me.
