Have a 4.5hp Sears Tecumseh push lawnmower.
Prime 5+ times (primer not firm), start, runs 5 - 10 seconds and dies, harder to restart, have to put fuel in cyl head or carb cleaner in carb.
Rebuilt carb (5 times) , ultrasonic cleanse, all orifices open, new needle, seat, gaskets, air filter, no acid bath, did not remove welch plugs???, good float and adjustment, good spark and compression, cleaned gas tank and line, fresh gas 89 octane, oil change. Starts like a Banshee then dies in 5 - 10 seconds.
Ready to crush with my excavator - Good YouTube video!. Sears/Tecumseh will appreciate the advertising.

Metal or plasic float?
your adjustment on this float is not level like briggs
if you havent done you need to take a 11/32 drill bit or adjust your float higher than level
and the bit goes between the float and the casting of the carb.as a gauge for the setting
you MAY HAVE a plastic nozzle they call it going up thru the center of the carb. with o-rings top and bottom of it
that will have to be pulled and cleaned and 0-rings replaced
does the primer bulb have a hole or no hole in the center of it?
adjust with the bowl gasket removed( the float)
yes on the priming delay so it can do what it is supposed to do
some are stubborn but they will come out (the nozzle) push and pull small needle nose to pull
if you break it i think it is sold seperately from the carb. kit anyway.
try rubbing alcohol also as it should or may help removal and reinstall especially with the new 0-rings
be sure all orifices you see are clean some are small as a stick pin so you can use a stick pin to clean or smaller.
the piece you screw in the carb. bowl to secure the bowl to the carb. be sure if it has orifices clean them good also
also be sure you float is empty
shake it and you should hear NO noise from it
sometimes fuel gets into it and makes it heavy
replace if you hear something

Will use the 11/32 bit to adjust. thanks,
I think I have a plastic jet, how do I remove it? Saw a post on pushing down from the throat with a flat blade, afraid to break it?
No holes in the primer bulb, but I have found they become lax, with time. Black rubber relatively soft. Not like the red firm ones.
Not much resistance when pumped. Perhaps I need to let some time lapse between pumps?
Thanks,
John Deere SB14 walk behind (10+ yrs old). Pull starter and engine turns over then dies. Wait 30 seconds same result, it will turn over then dies. Gets spark, fresh gas and fuel line appears patent. Pulled carberator and looks clean. Not sure where to go for here.
carb leks gas from primer vent
