Have you checked the main drive belt or the gearbox drive belt? Most mowers built by MTD have a main drive belt that is run from the motor pulley to the rear end, then a shorter belt actually drives the gearbox. Mine is a Cub Cadet and you can usually get to the back belt by removing the battery and battery box. By using a piece of water pipe about 3 ft long you can move the spring loaded pulley and reattach the belt. MTD builds a large majority of the riders up to 25 hp. Ex. John Deere, Cub Cadet, Troybilt and many of the store brand riders. my Cub Cadet sometimes has a drive linkage pin to fall out and instead of stopping it goes faster. you didn't give the brand name of your mower so that would help.

SOURCE: craftsman 42" riding lawn mower blade free spinning but wont cut

It sounds to me that you need a new mower deck drive belt, or your blades need sharpening. If the blade edges are rounded, they won't cut butter... Also, when mower is off, check mower deck drive pulleys to make sure you don't have any that are locked up or are dragging. You can check this by pulling the belt away from pulley and spinning the pulley by hand. MOWER MUST BE OFF before attempting any of these checks. You would be surprised how many people would try this with the mower running.
Hope this helps

John deere d140 ont move

there is a small handle on the back of most riders allowing you to free wheel the machine. If you can push your machine freely now then push the handle in and it should drive

How do you check the auto selector on craftsman lawn tractor ?

Make sure your bypass lever in the back is released. if it is, pull it out (engage) and release it a couple of times. If that doesnt work, try engaging the bypass and see if you can push the mower freely. If not, there is something wrong with your brakes.

Wont move forward or reverse-- transmission??

Does it have gears or a hydrostatic (automatic) transmission?

If it's a gear model, sounds like a loose drive belt.

If it's hydrostatic, it could be a belt problem or a problem inside the transmission. If it's a tranmission problem, this is not good. Many of the transmissions on riding lawn mowers are not serviceable - they are just replaced.

Wont go and screeches when letting off clutch/brake

Take off the shift plate between you legs, put it in nuetral, crank up the engine, put speed lever in high gear and slowly let off on the clutch. Everything will work as if in gear, it just won't move. you should be able to see what the problem is. Which belt did you replace and why? Watch the varible speed pulley (the one both belts go around). The bearings may be bad in it and not letting it turn, thus, smoking the front belt.
