I am having trouble with my thread wadding up on me. I will just be sewing along, and then the thread wads and the needle will no longer move. I have tried taking out the thread, rethreading, and taking out the shuttle and race and reassembling them. Sometimes, it will even pull the fabric down into the machine when this occurs. What can I do?
At the moment, I am trying to sew a tweed with several layers of batting behind it. Sometimes the stitching is fine, but then just bunches up with no warning. I just oiled my machine last night and changed the needle. I sewed with it a little with no problem, but will keep you posted on its progress. At the moment, I am trying to sew a tweed with several layers of batting behind it. When I use my machine I have the same problem as well. The only problem is that when I set the tension on 4-6 it makes my material pucker. I've sewn with it for about 2 months with no problem on a tension of 0 or 1 and it's been fine. What should I do?When I use my machine I have the same problem as well. Tension!!!! Its all about the tension! I just had this issue after loosening my tension. So tighten it - the higher the number the tighter the tension. My tension is set at 6 on a Singer 9005 and it seems to work great. By turning it down to 4 I ended up with huge loops/wads of string. Hope this helps!

Without more info, we're not able to assist. Make? Model? Have you tried removing the needle and then the bobbin case? Could be a wad of thread/lint in the bobbin area.
Remove the needle. Then, remove the needle plate and try to remove the bobbin case from the machine. Otherwise, very carefully snip thread wads with small scissors and remove the clipped thread pieces with tweezers.
1. Clean up any loose thread in the bobbin area.
2. Pull on the bobbin thread while it is out. It should give a tension that is equal to the top tension of three. You'll have to approximate. Adjust the screw tension on the bobbin. It is the screw nearest to the thread exit hole on the side.
3. Put it back in.
4. Now, the top tension should be at about three. If it still allows a little wad on the bottom of the fabric you can adjust the top tension by tightening a small amount and monitor each time you adjust. The wad should go away.
It's probably not the timing. It's probably a piece of needle or a wad of thread under the needle plate or in the shuttle area. Clean all that out and try again.
Needle may be having a hard item getting through a thick wad of fabric -- use a heavier-size needle. Or, threads have bunched up and need to be cut to release the machine. Check the underside of fabric for bunching threads in that case -- and adjust your top tension.
More than likely it is your top threading that is not right. Try seating the thread in the tension discs. To do this, rethread, now with the presser foot up, pull the thread, it should feed smoothly. 'After this, put the presser foot down, it should barely move. Hope this helps.
