How do you stop the upright freezer from freezing up.

The drainage tube from self defrost freezes up and ice builds up inside the freezer.I have had to take the 2 lower shelves out and remove the back panel covering the fins and use a hairdryer to heat up the small opening for quite a while until it thaws. Have had to do it 2 times a year. What is the solution to this design flaw?

SOURCE: The freezer is not freezing evenly.

Yes, the fan needs to be running. I can't say for sure since I can't test it, but if you can, test for voltage to the fan wires. If it has voltage, replace the fan.

SOURCE: Only upper section of the freezer works, heavy ice-buildup.

Good day,
You are right about the assumption it's a refrigerant leak. Simply recharging it is a waste since it would shortly if not sooner leak back out.
There are a lot of areas that can be the origin of the leak and unfortunately some models actually run lines inside the walls where they cannot be accessed.
As well if it's due to corroding tubing then it's somewhat like fixing a rotten tire.

The only hope would be a tech familiar with your make and model who is aware of a specific area that is prone to leakage in an isolated area that is not prone to travel.
You may choose to try calling around, but the chances are slim.

Testimonial: "Thank you for your prompt response, although I was hoping for better news. Too bad, the freezer is otherwise in perfect condition."

I have a upright haier freezing not freezing

Look to see if you have ice build up on the back panel of your freezer on the inside. If you do, chances are something in defrost cycle has failed. If you don't, you'll need to see if the compressor is running. Either way, you'll probably need someone to come out and look at it.

Freezer model EV171NYMS04 we have ice build up on

There is a drain the back of the freezer that is frozen. Your trickle of water comes from the ice that melts off of the refrigeration coils during the defrost cycle. You need to turn off the freezer, then remove the rear cover from the back wall to expose the coils. With a hair dryer, melt all of the ice. You will find a drain under the coils. Melts all of the ice in this drain so water can get out of the freezer. When this drain is clear, you can put everything back together, and your freezer should work normally.

Maytag upright freezer with self defrost. The water line freezes.

This sounds like your defrost heating coil has gon bad. Not much you can do but replace it. Please leave a good thumbs up for me for the effort. Pretty sure I'm correct on this one. The Raz Shack

Had a fridge freezer in garage. Just found that

more than likely the defroster inside the freezer has gone bad. This defroster is located in the space between the fridge and freezer and activates to defrost the freezer and stop build up of ice in the freezer.. If it is bad the freezer will not keep the fridge nor freezer cold.

Ice collects on the bottom of my frost free woods freezer

im not sure if i answered this one before. but this sounds like a blocked drain, the drain is located midway behind the shelves, you can take away the catch tray and poke a coat hanger down this hole hole to dislodge the blockage.

Ice build up in my frost free upright freezer

I looked at the BACK at the bottom underneath of my Sears Kenmore frost free upright freezer and what was causing the ice buildup was very simple. At the factory, the assembler looped the little hose too high and when the water went into the hose it could not get out due to being too high in one spot! An ice dam will form, blocking ALL water coming through
and freezing up any more water coming down giving you a HUGE wad of ice that is scary!!! I just removed the screw holding the loop that holds the hose and put a bit of warm water down the little hole on the INSIDE (Behind the grate) to melt the remaining ice in the tube. You need to take out 4 screws and remove the grate to see this. I could not believe that this was the problem! I haven't had any ice build up since. Now don't tear your freezer apart before you try this trying to fix the compressor, thermostat etc. It may be the only thing wrong with it!
