Although blockages in the shroud and cooling fins are the most common cause of overheating, a small gas engine can also overheat if the fuel-air mix is too lean. Are you sure the carb overhaul kit had the right parts, and is there any possible of adjusting the mixture? Here is a set of parts diagrams for your tractor - Engine-2 has the carburetor-related parts.
Good luck!
When your tractor is running check the voltage at the battery posts with a meter. If the voltae is above 12 you are chrging good and need to replace the battery. If it is lower than 12 then the regulator and altinator are next. Remove the regulator and you will find numbers on it to take to a dealer and replace or have checked. Do the same with altinator..it could be either so give it your best guess in the order you want to have them checked. On a personal note..check your ground wire from battery to frame and make sure it is tight and clean. :) Hope this helps.
It sounds like your charge system is not working. If you jump the battery the engine will run with a weak battery but the pto clutch needs a strong battery to stay engaged.Try this to test it,after you jump it leav the jumper cables hooked up and try to engage the blade clutch,if it runs it is either a battery that wont take a charge or a charge system not working. If you put a volt meter on the battery while the engine is running and the voltage is 13 volts the charge system is working and the battery is bad.
