SOURCE: How to work the iphone sleep and wake button?

Hey D, It's quite simple. Check this out: With the iphone open press the sleep button to lock your screen. From this moment on the screen will no longer be active but all other functions will continue to work- which means that you will still receive calls and can continue to listen to music. To turn the screen on just click on the sleep button once again. You?ll need to confirm the action by sliding your finger across the virtual slider on the screen. Hope this helps! Volcane

SOURCE: sleep button wont work and its disabled

Hello,
Could you clarify what is the sleep button?:
- The home button on the front
- The power button on the top
- or the vibration disble button on the left

Probably the flex cable that connects the button to the motherboard is not working. These parts are cheap and easy to install. You can find the replacement connectors for all these buttons here:

You could try putting the phone into recovery mode, then resetting the firmware through iTunes. To enter recovery mode you must: 1) Open iTunes and connect your iPhone 2) Press and hold the home button and the sleep button at the same time. 3) After 10 seconds, release the sleep button but continue holding the home button After following these steps, your iPhone should now be in recovery mode and ready to be restored using iTunes. Good luck!

My phone will not ring, it is not on any silent modes

If something isn't working right, restarting, force quitting an application, or resetting
iPhone will likely solve the problem.
Restart iPhone: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the red slider appears.
Slide your finger across the slider to turn off iPhone. To turn iPhone back on, press and
hold the Sleep/Wake until the Apple logo appears.
If you can't turn off iPhone or if the problem continues, you may need to reset. A reset
should be done only if turning iPhone off and on doesn't resolve the problem.
Force quit an application: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on top of iPhone
for a few seconds until a red slider appears, and then press and hold the Home button
until the application quits.
Reset iPhone: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the
same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

Iphone 3gs wont work. white flashlight screen?? please help

If iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or you can't sync iPhone
  1. The iPhone battery might need to be recharged. For information about charging iPhone, see "Charging the Battery" in the iPhone User's Guide.
  2. If that doesn't work, disconnect other USB devices from your computer and connect iPhone to a different USB 2.0 port on your computer (not on your keyboard).
  3. If that doesn't work, turn iPhone off and turn it on again. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on top of iPhone for a few seconds until a red slider appears, and then slide the slider. Then press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.

Note: If you enter the SIM PIN incorrectly three times, you may need to contact your carrier for a Personal Unlocking Key (PUK) to enable your SIM card again.
  4. If that doesn't work, restart your computer and reconnect iPhone to your computer.
  5. If that doesn't work, download and install (or reinstall) the latest version of iTunes.
If you can't make or receive calls, send or receive text messages, or access email or the web
  1. Check the cell signal indicator in the status bar at the top of the screen. If there are no bars, or if it says "No service," try moving to a different location. If you're indoors, try going outdoors or moving closer to a window.
  2. Check to make sure you’re in an area with network coverage. Go to your carrier's website to see network coverage areas.
  3. Make sure airplane mode isn't on. From the Home screen choose Settings, then turn Airplane Mode off.
  4. If that doesn't work, turn airplane mode on, wait 15 seconds, then turn airplane mode off again.
  5. Make sure to include an area code for every phone number in your contacts list that you use to send or receive text messages.
  6. If that doesn't work, turn iPhone off and turn it on again. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on top of iPhone for a few seconds until a red slider appears, then slide the slider. Then press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.

Note: If you enter the SIM PIN incorrectly three times, you may need to contact your carrier for a Personal Unlocking Key (PUK) to enable your SIM card again.
  7. If that doesn't work, there may be an issue with your wireless service. Call your carrier or go to your carrier's website.
  8. If that doesn't work, restore the iPhone software. See Backing up, updating, and restoring your iPhone and iPod touch software or see "Updating and Restoring iPhone Software" in the iPhone User's Guide.
MMS: Original iPhone does not support MMS. MMS is available on iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS if it is supported by the wireless carrier. For more information, please see iPhone: System requirements for MMS.

If iPhone won't turn on, or the display freezes or doesn't respond See iPhone and iPod touch: Frozen and unresponsive for information on addressing these symptoms.
  1. iPhone OS 2.x and earlier: Press and hold the Home button until the application quits.
iPhone OS 3.x and later: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the red slider appears, then press and hold the Home button until the application quits.
  2. If that doesn't work, turn iPhone off and turn it on again. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on top of iPhone for a few seconds until a red slider appears, and then slide the slider. Then press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
  3. If that doesn't work, reset iPhone. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
If iPhone continues to freeze or not respond after you reset it
  1. Reset iPhone settings. From the Home screen choose Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings. All your preferences are reset, but no data or media is deleted.
  2. If that doesn't work, reset iPhone. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears restore the iPhone software. See Backing up, updating and restoring your iPhone and iPod touch software.

My Iphone 3g doesnt turn on.. I only get the apple when powering up and then a black screen.. I tried charging it all night (different chargers) and doesnt work.. I tried rebooting many times.. that doesnt...

If you just see an apple logo or your phone does not turn on, there is a software problem and you will need to restore your iPhone. I didn't want to hear it, because now I had to redo everything; but it's the only solution.

Put your iPhone into recovery mode.

To put your iPhone in recovery mode:
Step 1: Plug in your iPhone to your computer, make sure your sound is turned on and not muted.
Step 2: Hold the top corner button for two seconds. You should hear a sound.
Step 3: Now, still holding the top power button, immediately press the home button and hold both buttons for 10 seconds. You should hear another sound from your computer.

Step 4: Release the power button but *continue holding the home button*, for another 30 seconds.
Step 5: Meanwhile, continue holding the Home button and open iTunes. Wait for it to tell you that it’s in restore mode. You should also hear a third sound from your computer during this time.

Step 6: Click on your iPhone in iTunes. It should say it's in recovery mode and need to be restored. Step 7: Click OK and restore it.

Now you will need to re-jailbreak it, and restore your backup, and also put your music back in.

Good Luck!

Hi im using the iphone 2g, first of all, my sleep / wake button didnt work a few months ago. So i cant turn the iphone off or use any restart mode without using jailbreak software, just now, the iphone...

To reset your phone you need to hold the power button and home button. Because you cannot do this, I would open up the iphone and repair the button. To open up easily use a -> iPhone Cheetah Mount and replace or fix the button. The iPhone is like a computer, it needs to reset at times. Your only solution would be to let the battery drain to zero and plug it back in.
