2002 Oldsmobile Silhouette V-6-3.4L Vin E 76000 miles. My AC
was not blowing cold air and not much force. I had the condenser replaced and
the cabin air filters replaced. Now I have a great amount of air blowing thru
the vents. I used a thermometer to measure the temp. I have cold air down to
40deg. F. This is cold air.
The blower will blow air thru vents and can be changed to
the different settings. All the settings work. Air will also blow from the rear
vents when using the front panel or the rear panel. The problem is while the
air is blowing the temp will fluctuate, or not come on at all. Then for no
reason the temp will drop. I can feel this with my hand and watch it on the
thermometer. I also notice that the thermometer will form condensation on it.
This is a signal that the air is cycling off. The ac will cool for about a min.
and then cycle off for around 30 sec. this will continue until I turn it off.
Then when I stop for a break and restart the van the ac will not cool, the air
blows but will not cool. Then it will start to cool and cycle.
While I was playing with all the controls, I moved the
climate control slides up and down. I then noticed that I was getting cold air
on the driver’s side and HOT air on the passenger side at the same time. The
climate control sliders were both in the same position, all the way at the
bottom, (cold air position).
Today on my way home I stopped the van and let it sit for
about 2 minutes. Then started up again, I turned on the ac but no cold air.
Also non tempered air was blowing from the rear vents. I got in the back and
controlled the ac from the rear controls and still non tempered air. But the
front was cooling.
I have taken my van back to the service center a couple of
times. He said after he replaced the cabin air filters that he did not have a
good feeling about the unit. But go ahead and drive it and see what happens. I
have taken4 trips of 150 miles at a
time, and another of 100 miles. I have had the van back to the service center
and he cannot seem to find the problem. Of course it was not very warm the days
that I was able to leave the van with him. I now have this extra information
and would like any feedback that you may offer. Now it is very warm (80-95 deg
F), and the problem is worse. When first started the ac will not kick on for
about two to five minutes. Then will cool for a minute or two and go off. This cycle
repeats and the thermometer never registers below 55 deg.

there can be air pocket somewhere you need to bleed system properly. rais the front let is idle bleed it thru bleeding screw. be sure that bubbles are over.
air pockets prevent coolant travel inside system. so it may not reach to radiator, or cabin heater or both.
# 5 on front ac has to work for rear to work..if it works then there is a switch that controls the rear cost about $80..and the blower back by compressor also was out on mine...there is a fuse that can make #5 setting on front ac work check that first
Overheating problems usually warrant some troubleshooting. First, check your antifreeze level. If it's low, replace it, run it for a couple of minutes with your heater on, then recheck it. Next, your thermostat could be stuck. For about 30 minutes worth of work, and about $10 of parts, you can do this replacement yourself. This will usually give you the symptoms of having one coolant hose being hot and the other cool, if it's the thermostat that's stuck closed. The next place to look is the water pump. There aren't too many reliable ways of testing one of these at home, so it's pretty much a replace and pray, because if it isn't, then it's something more serious like a blown head gasket or a cracked head. These last two can disclose their presence by evidence of oil or antifreeze leakage, or white smoke when you first start up your vehicle in the morning, but will not always do this.
Hello msbrig, This is a REAL SWAG
(stab in the dark... (a bit reasoned))...
Confession... I'm no GM expert... but General Motors & FRIDGIDAIRE
are the "GREATS" in automotive A/C.
and
This is the BEST DOCUMENTED QUESTION I have
ever seen(congratulations)...
I hope I am not doing a disservice by attempting an answer...
If your vents blow al any time... you ought disregard their behavior.. Likewise temperature controls...
and DUAL EVAPORATRS... front & rear...
The fact that your troubles are intermittent in the FRONT & REAR is a really great SYMPTOM...
You are MOST LIKELY looking at only two POSSIBLE PROBLEMS....
1. - Either your CHARGE is insufficient to keep
the compressor running.(pressure switch monitored)
OR
2. - You have a SATUATED DRYER which is allowing moisture to block your EXPANSION VALVES (internal ice) ...
External frosting is expected... a lot of externalFROST is an indication of #1. (above: low charge)...
A descent refrigeration person should be
able to tell you the HIGH and LOW pressure loads... and watch your system cycle for a few minutes... Which should be long enough to DETERMINE if you are experiencing
INTERNAL MOISTURE ISSUES...
Some folks ROUTINELY replace the ""DRYERS' (desiccant) I do not... I use brains, gauges, experience... and your vehicles HISTORY
I am here most every day... Push comes to shove... I have the
Lincoln Navigator... dual EVAPORATOR system...
(I'll pull the book & take a look).
You can comment me back...
I bought ALL THE TOOLS years ago... NOTWITHSTANDING my amateur standing... I only let the JAGUAR DEALER jam me for an $800 Schrader Valve since 1965 (Mustang(all the rest... I did myself)).
Happy to chat... comment me back.
(again: here daily)
The system may need to be recharged, All A/C system will have small leaks though the seals and when you lose enough R134 the system will stop blowing cold air.
I am guessing that it stop working now as to that there is no cold air but the blower fan is still working right??
Or do you mean that there is cold air and then it stops making cold air after 50 miles but will work again after a few hours of the can not running. If that's the case, the A/C relay may be bad and when it heats up the relay fails and needs to be replaced.
Good luck and keep me posted.
