How to trouble shoot this problem
Patti - I had the same problem yesterday with my E8. If you still have an issue, and have cleaned the tamper area like tech support will tell you to do, try this...Turn off the machine and remove the tray. Use your fingers to probe around the metal thing in the middle. You will find several areas where grounds accumulate. I found two areas in particular - one on each side of the center - where I had the motherload of old grounds. Remove all this, then clean out the chute where powder goes. Replace the tray, turn the unit back on and run a cleaning with no tablet. When it asks for the tablet, open the top door, wait a second, close the door and continue. If you got all the gunk out, you should complete the cleaning cycle with no issues. But seriously, you have to use your fingers for the clean out. You can't see, and q-tips don't work..so you have to feel around. Good luck and let me know how it goes.
I have had the same problem several times. What finally solved it was cleaning the "shower screen" as mentioned in several other peoples comments. The only thing I would like to add is using a wet paper towel did not work. I ended up using a dish towel (not terry cloth) that had the texture of a coarse linen napkin. I wet it and wrapped it over my fingers and scrubbed pretty aggressively. I also changed the grind setting to a more coarse setting. It worked and I have had no problems for a couple of weeks now.
