In my 2001 Volvo S80, the radio worked intermittantly for a few months and then not at all. There is still power to the radio, speakers are good, and all radio fuses are good.

I had a car radio do that once in a used car I bought cheap, it turned out to just be a loose connector on the back of the radio, I clicked it in and it worked fine.

I think you will find it is called 'Limp Mode'. It is the Engine Control Module finding a fault so serious that is might permanently damage the vehicle. You need to connect it to a Scan Tool and read the codes. The codes tell you the problem and the fix.
start with power.
then antenna connection
once on insure settings r right
then turn on max volume and listen for any sound inside radio.
any indication of sound would tell u the problem is the power amp or speaker connections
Take the radio back out and double check your connections. If it is a factory system you may have the connections crossed some Volvo radios come with multiple plug-ins
Get a good aftermarket Stereo installed. They have adapter harnesses to plug right into your existing Amplifier and Speakers and it will probably be much cheaper than fixing the Radio.
Try resetting the electrical system by locking and unlocking the doors with your key in the driver's door 5 times in a row. A service manager at a Volvo dealer showed me this after they did some work on my car and on the way home the sunroof wouldn't close.
I have a 2001 S80 that I have to reset the electrical system like this every time I disconnect the battery. All kinds of stuff stops working...sun roof, door locks, lights, radio, windows, etc. Just reset like described and everything should start working again.
I had an OLDs with the same problem... it was the starter, I got one and its still a city car two years later...... ck it out... good luck................
