Hi i have an old Sony Handy Cam CCD TR 317 E, and i want to trnasfer videos in my laptop, what attachment would i require
Check if you have a Firewire port that is either a 6pin or 4 pin port that looks like
Use a firewire IEEE 1394 cable kit and appropriate software too transfer to PC. Most firewire to usb cable will not work.
You will need a
1. Firewire cable
2. Firewire port on PC/Laptop as well.
3. Recent OS that supports firewire.
4. Appropriate image/video editing software.

Please use Video Head Cleaning cassette to clean its video head. I'm sure, you get error sign of Dirty Video Head in view finder while recording.

You need to get a Digital to Analogue converter such as the Canopus ADVC110 A/D Converter. (circa $225). There may be cheaper alternatives. (you might also be able to use a digital camcorder that has a built in Analogue to digital converter):
Canopus 77010150100 ADVC110 Converter
The Canopus comes with a 6-pin firewire cable. Since your Dell Studio has a 4 pin Firewire (actually called iLink) you will also need a 6-pin to 4-pin cable or an adapter:
Firewire 6-PIN To 4-PIN Cable
Cables To Go - 27028 - Firewire 6-Pin Female 4-Pin Male Adapter
You hook your Sony up to the A/D converter with audio and video cables (usually supplied with your camcorder) and hook the converter to you Dell with a firewire cable. Then you capture the video using some video capture software. I don't know what comes with windows these days.

I would like to know more about this USB adapter cable you bought. The camera has a IEEE-1394 (commonly refered to as Firewire or i-Link) connection that is inherently incompatible with USB. I don't see how one cable could do the trick unless it had some kind of conversion hardware built into it. Does it have a little box on the cable or is it just a straight cable?
CNet.com says that your laptop has a four pin Firewire port on it. I would go to BestBuy and tell them you need a Firewire cable with a four pin connector on both ends. If they give you a weird look tell them that is the small Firewire plug, not the big one. If they are still confused, get somebody else to help you. Then use that cable to plug your camera into your computer. Windows should recogonize it automatically. If it doesn't there may be a problem with you camera.

You can use a card reader to transfer your file from your handycam to your computer. Remove the memory card in your camera and insert it to the card reader and insert it to your computer to transfer your recorded video.
