Some XBox games have both a 360 and original XBox version, so you can't play them on the 360. Other games simply aren't compatible. Your game may fall into one of those two groups.
It will play some and others it wont and in my experience there are buttons on the original xbox that xbox 360 doesnt have therefore preventing accurate game play

After that you must be signed in on xbox live and start the game to download a patch that will allow your xbox 360 to play Xbox games.

Unfortunately, you're out of luck on this depending on what game you're trying to play. The 360 is not (and never was) 100% backward compatible with the original Xbox, so your best bet is to find a cheap first-gen Xbox to play the older games on. Also, you need to take into account that quite some time ago MS shut down it's multiplayer component for the Xbox, so games like Halo can only be played in single-player mode no matter which console you play them on.
Which version of the xbox 360 do you have? Is it the arcade version? Unless an xbox 360 has an attached hard drive, it won't play xbox games.

Also, you must have an ORIGINAL XBox 360 Hard Drive. If you have replaced it with an off-brand, it may not work.
Make sure you are playing an original game made by microsoft only if that doesnt work then there is a probably problem with your reader like dust or something electrical
Only certain Xbox titles will play on the 360.

Rats. Sorry to hear that. You've got a bad DVD drive. If it's under
warranty still just get your serial number off the back and call
1-800-4MY-XBOX for repair or replacement.
This is a common problem and some people even choose to replace the DVD
drive to reduce the noise while the console is operating.

make suer the disc is very clean.
Most likely you will need to replace the laser on your xbox. It's not strong enough to read the games anymore. You can get a laser from ebay for like $15.

You can't just replace the drive with a working drive on the xbox 360. the drive is married to the mainboard with a special key. If you replacing the drive with a drive that's the same brand/model them you can take the logic board from the old drive and put it in the replacement drive. otherwise you will have to extract the key from your old drive and patch in the new drive. not an easy task.

This is a pretty easy one to fix if you aren't too scared to open the 360 up, otherwise you will have to send to Microsoft.
The problem is that the laser is either dying out, is dirty, or is not getting enough power.
so try to fix it using these steps...
- first open the 360 and pull out the dvd drive and open it up too.
- clean everything out good with compressed air, and q-tips dipped in alcohol.
- now you need to adjust the power going to the laser. Sometimes you may have to try multiple settings before getting it just right. Just keep adjusting the resistance lower and lower until it works.
- if you tried multiple settings and still get the errors, then either get a replacement drive, or a new laser for it. Click Here for how to properly install the new laser.
