Slacken off the bolt in the top of the handlebar stem and tap it gently with a mallet. Then you can adjust the height, and tighten it back up. There is a video here
The above answer is incorrect. The Ditch has what is called a "threadless" fork/stem setup. One cannot raise the stem at all unless there are spacers above it. Raising the stem is also not the only option. A stem with a shorter "reach" may be sufficient. Google "threadless stem riser" to see options for raising the stem. Following is a video with the procedure.
There is a single central connection to the handlebars This is called the "gooseneck". (Ther handlebars slide through the goosenect and then the gooseneck is tightened to hold the handlebars. The connector to tighten is in the front (so you do not get "injured" if you have a collison). Loosten the connector (it may be allen, or perhaps hex nut.). Raise or adjust the handlebars, then tighten. Make sure it is really tight (do not strip the threads). The handlebar has serrations to lock on to the gooseneck so the handlebar - gooseneck bolt will have to be loosened quite a bit to allow the serrations to "jump" to the next serration.
I'm answering 7 years later. I have a Schwinn Varsity 2500 Bike made probably in 2015. The Schwinn Varsity Bike is not set up the same way as a traditional bike. I loosened the center compression bolt and the two side stem clamp bolts and it came loose where I can adjust it up or down but, there's nothing to tighten the slack up below. I did some research. My original post here was to add or remove a spacer. I think you can remove a spacer to lower but, I don't think the stem is long enough to add another one. I've seen they sell an extension that you can add-on to make the handle bars higher.
You will need a 6mm allen key to loosen ( turn anti clock wise) the handlebar stem bolt which when you sit on the bike and look down its just under yer nose :)
Please make sure when you raise the handlebars that as it lifts up there is a marking on the side of the handle bar "stem" with markings like this """"" if you see these you need to lower it down so you cannot see these.
Simply type in 'Hyosung parts' in your preferred search engine and look for the replacement handlebar kit for an 'S'. Instead of the handlebars clipping on to the sleeve at the top of each fork like the 'R', the 'S' set is bolted on to the two other bolts you see on the inside top of your handlebars. It's as simple as buying the 'raising' kit, bolting it on; unbolting your existing handlebars and re bolting to the raised 'S' style kit. About a half hour job with a shifter!
If your bike is older it might have a quill stem.To raise this you have to undo the allen key headed bolt situated where the bar & stem attach to the bike.It is often obscured by a plastic plug to prevent water rusting the bolt head.If this doesn't go high enough an adjustable quill stem must be fitted.
If you have the modern design of stem(A-head)you will have to replace the stem with an adjustable type which can be set upto 60 degrees.
