I got a compaq evo d510 refurbished and I have ATT extreem internet service and 2 wire router conected to comp with erthnet cable, It will not connect after installing att cd. It keeps trying to use dial...

Since you are using the Internet I must assume you are using the Dial up settings. I may expect that this AT&T service is DSL. In Internet Settings there is a tab marked "Connections" and the Dial Up settings are set to "Always Dial My Default Connection". Click on "Never Dial a Connection" and this problem should be solved. Next thing is to ensure that the DSL connection is connected properly since if this is not setup correctly you won't even get online until you reset the "Connections" tab to the original setting.

No activity on my new speedstream 4200

Ethernet and DSL lights are indicating you have ADSL available on your line, and that you have computers connected to the router.

What has probably happened is that Optus did not set up the new router with your username and password. Go to thw following website for details on how to setup the modem.

http://help.optuszoo.com.au/help/dsl/connected/windows/optus_modems/speedstream_4200

Manual Modem Settings The Optus DSL Broadband self-installation CD configures all the necessary settings for your DSL Broadband service. You do not need to manually configure your modem if you have run the self-installation CD. While the following information is provided for your reference, using the self-installation CD is the recommended method for configuring your modem.
The Siemens SpeedStream 4200 ADSL modem can use either USB or Ethernet to connect to your computer.
  • If you are connecting via USB you will need to run the self-installation CD to install the USB driver before you connect your modem. The Siemens SpeedStream 4200 ADSL modem supplied by Optus has been customised for the Optus DSL Broadband service. Only the USB driver supplied on the self-installation CD will work with the Optus service. If you do not have the self-installation CD, you can download the latest drivers from the Siemens website.
  • If you are connecting via Ethernet it is possible to manually configure your modem without the self-installation CD. Only a web browser is required.
After connecting your modem there are two key steps to manually configure your modem for the Optus DSL Broadband service:
  • PC settings - Configure your computer's Ethernet network interface.
  • Configure Your Modem - Set the password in your modem's configuration pages.

PC Settings Step by step instructions are provided for each of the supported Windows operating systems:

Ip configuration

Does your friend and yours IP settings the same?To clarify you would have 2 types of connection from your ISP.The 1st type of connection is that the authentication happens in the modem through the PPPOE UN/PW and the IP configurations are done in the modem and as such wont require to configure the IP settings when the windows is reinstalled. However the 2nd type of DSL service is that the IP settings are done in the windows and does not require any PPPOE username and password to authenticate. You would have to verify with your ISP which type of service you have and if you require any change order to make it the same way your friend has.

Please let me know any clarification you would require for this issue.
