This is usually caused by mostly using low temperature washes. The detergent manufacurers don't tell you, but low temperatures don't kill the bacteria present on most clothes, so they breed and and multiply in nice warm moist washing mashines. The cure is to do a "maintenance wash" every so often, which is the hottest wash the machine can do, and this will kill the bacteria. Also adding washing soda to this wash will help to freshen it up.

Smell of stale water from Avanti compact washer

It may not be draining very well.

I have a front load washer and run a cycle of a few cups of bleach through mine every couple months.

I also add vinegar to most washes but that's due to my teenage son's athletic wear.

Both those things do the trick.

You shoudl probably check the mechanics as well but the above is a stop gap.

A stale water coming from inside. What could i "run"through to get rid of the smell Regards Sally

Hello,
Your local home depot sells a product called AFFRESH. This product is supposed to be used on all front load washing machines and can also be used on top load washers as well. They make two types of this product one is for washing machines and the other is for dishwashers. You basicly add one of the tablets to your machine on the hotest setting and run the machine without any clothes inside the unit. It takes away the smells such as stagnant water smells and can also remove mold smells as well inside of a washing machine. Sometimes I find for stronger odors it is best to use two tablets instead of one and run both cycles one after the other. Also how high is your drain line in the unit set at. The drain should be about 6 inches above the highest point of the machine for best results on the machine emptying the water out of the unit. If you have any further questions message me back and please also remember when our chat has fully concluded to rank how this opinion has helped in your appliance situation it allows me to continue helping others in similar situations in the future. Thanks

Hi

The smell usually comes when the washer is unable to drain water completely, you can run your washer at its hottest temperature setting with 1 cup of vinegar inside the unit. After this take off the bottom front panel and clean it completely, also clean the drain hose and drain pump filter, the smell should disappear after doing all this. Hope this helps...please post back for further assistance.

Mildrew, stale water smell in laundry

Run a very hot wash on your machine with no load

Fill a bucket with a strong solution of soda crystals and pour it into the machine first

Add some more crystals to the soap dispenser

Use an old fashioned soap powder for a couple of washes as well and reduce the load slightly

Modern soap powders do not contain certain bleaches and soda and the 40 degree wash leaves body fats and oils inside which cause odours

Stale smell on crockery after wash

Most commonly, this relates to sulfides or other impurities in the water itself, but may also be caused by a buildup of food soil within the washer. Smell a clean glass of water. Does it smell stale also? If no, clean the screens and wash water sump/tank within the machine.
You can also clean the inside of the machine by using a commercial grade dish machine detergent and increasing water temp if possible.
If the water smells stale, consult a local water expert for guidance in resolving

Stale water smell

If the washing machine itself smells bad when you open the door, it could be that it's covered in a horrible grease and gunge inside all the hoses and the tub. This particularly affects older washing machines and is common with washing machines that have only really been used at 40° or where only liquid detergent has been used.

Not using enough soap detergent over a long period of time can cause a build up of grease and therefore bad smells.
Get rid of washing machine smells

You could try to clean the washing machine inside using Soda crystals which dissolve grease. I recommend putting half a packet inside the drum and washing on a boil wash (or follow instructions on the packet) Using this method every month or so, or using ordinary detergent if no soda crystals are available can help prevent smells from your washing machine. If your washing machine is badly affected by grease and slime, it may be very difficult to remove it.

Get rid of washing machine odours using vinegar
White distilled vinegar has an array of uses. For bad washing machine smells, try putting half a cup of white vinegar inside an empty machine and put it on a boil wash. Because the first bit of water goes into the sump hose and is sealed off, I recommend that you wait until the washing machine has been filling for about 30 seconds and then pour the vinegar into the soap drawer to let it wash down into the machine. I've had reports back from people that this does actually work.
