Transmission fail safe, cannot select reverse

car is only two year old

wont select reverse of revs out in reverse?

module says std automatic and not a CVT transmission
when a module goes into fail safe you always have reverse and third

check oil level first
wont select
check shift cables or linkages adjustment shift stick alignment

revs out
more likely a solenoid or mechanical failure
if there is a bang as you shift into reverse its the oil pump

if none of the above are the cause
could be the module ......not sure on that

the transmission computer computer has gone into fail safe mode

an electronic failure not a mechanical failure
could be something simple as a computer re-set or
a transmission solenoid s

or automatic transmission work shop to fix it

is engine light on

if motor reving and going where = torque converter

if stuck in third and reverse only

You have a failed transmission.

Sounds like the backup light switch is stuck. It is normally installed in the side of the transmission case and is activated by the transmission going into reverse. They can get gummed up over time and fail to release when coming out of reverse.

No reverse with normal forward engagement is a sign of a failed transmission.

When the reverse fails the transmission must be removed from the car and rebuilt or replaced with a exchange unit (preferred method)

The Transmission control module is in fail safe. Do you have any lights on the dash? Have you checked the Transmission fuse?

Does the gear selector show that is in reverse? Does the transmission have gear selector solenoids on the transmission? If so, may be a bad reverse select solenoid. Do the 'backup' lights come on when reverse is selected?
