My kenmore elite gas range model 790.79013102...the oven doesn't always stay not for cooking purposes. Sometimes it takes a very long time (15 minutes) to preheat. Sometimes it will cook just fine i.e. when baking cookies, but when we put the 3rd or 4th batch in the oven it fails to stay heated to desired temperature.

SOURCE: Preheat taking long time

If your oven has the hidden bake element then it is probably working properly. A standard oven with an exposed bake element will usually take about 12-15 minutes to preheat. The hidden element models take a little longer but they usually heat a little more evenly.

SOURCE: Oven lights ,but doesn't heat to preset temperature

The problem is usually the igniter not reaching the correct amp draw .When the igniter does not reach the correct amp draw it may allow the gas valve to partially open or not open at all. The igniters are inexpensive and easy to replace. There is a video at http://appliancehelponline.com/gasoventroubleshootvideo.html this will walk you thru the correct procedure for performing this test. It may be a different model but the testing will be the same. You can also enter your model # for diagrams and illustrations of your specific model. Not all models are available. All parts come with installation instructions.

For replacement parts - head on over to PartSelect.com or RepairClinic.com and enter in your full model number for a full parts listing.
I recommend both sites because ...

FixYa has no affiliation with either site - I have been using and recommending them for years - trouble free.

PartSelect has a great schematic database for locating the part on your unit and great "testimonials" for each part that often times includes HOW-TO information.
RepairClinic has pictures of each part they sell and also a great how-to and troubleshooting for basic repairs.

If your unit has never been serviced - there should still be an original service manual enclosed in plastic taped to the inside of the shell.
In the service manual are Error codes, maintenance procedures, and troubleshooting steps you can follow.

Anything too complicated or beyond your scope should be handled by a professional.

If you think you want to tackle the repair - and have gotten stuck on a step - reply to your question and I will be glad to help you out.

Thanks for using FixYa - a 4 THUMBS rating is appreciated for answering your FREE question.

Problem with kenmore elite gas range. Oven will not heat

It sounds like you may have a problem with the gas valve or the igniter in your Kenmore Elite gas range. The gas valve controls the flow of gas to the burner, and the igniter provides the spark to light the gas.
If the glow plug is coming on but the gas is not igniting, it could be a problem with the igniter itself or the gas valve. The igniter may not be producing a strong enough spark to light the gas, or the gas valve may be clogged or malfunctioning, preventing the gas from flowing properly.
You may want to have a professional technician take a look at your range to diagnose and fix the problem. It is important to have any gas appliance serviced by a qualified technician to ensure safe operation.

Kenmore elite microwave 721.80833 stops cooking intermittently

Check the door switches if one is bad it may think the door is being opened and stop the unit from running. If it is from a bad connection it will get worse as it gets hotter while running.

Oven slow to ignite and come to temperature.

Change the igniter.

As they age, they often times will no longer draw enough amperage to allow the gas safety valve to open. Increasing the line voltage would help, but that's a little impractical.

Range Oven Temperature Sensor Part Number WB20K0004 Sears PartsDirect
This will be why the oven acts up. The broiler doesn't rely as much on this as the bake part does. Replace this and it should fix your problem.

Replace your oven ignitor. It has to draw enough current to open the gas valve. it is only drawing enough current 85 percent of the time so the other 15 percent it wont light the oven (Gas valve wont open) The part number for the ignitor is 8190618 and is 55 bucks at sears.com
