Sony hdtv red lights blinking, make a humming noise when powered on

Retrace the installation of the lamp.When close the lid cover make sure the protection switch not on.

5 times Red LED blinks means Lamp Driver Error. (KDF-55WF655)
2 possible reasons, either Lamp is gone or Ballast Supply got bad.
Replace lamp first, in most cases it solved the problem.
How old is this TV and did you replaced lamp recently?

The color wheel needs replacing. Thats causing the whining and it will also make the lamp light blink.

I too have a Sony KDS-R60XBR1 tv and the issue that you are experiencing is due to one of your fans in the rear of the tv is not working.  The tv automatically shuts off in protective mode.  Make sure the POWER/STANDBY light is blinking and not the lamp light below it.  Is the power/standby blinking 4 times in red? If, yes then its a fan that needs to be replaced.  If its the lamp light blinking then you need to replace the lamp.  The lamp is easy to replace by ordering the lamp either from Sony for $250 or find it cheaper for approx. $150 from other DLP sources and replace youself by following your manual.  I hope this helps you.

The lamp cover door was not secured tightly. Door does not "push" shut easily. Got a little rough with it and latched it shut, then the tv worked fine.

It sounds like a bad lamp, a bad lamp driver or a combination of the two. Be aware that sometimes a bad lamp driver will blow a perfectly good lamp, so if you're not sure which is causing the problem, replacing BOTH would probably be the best course of action

Yes that is the indicator telling you its time to replace the lamp in your unit.

replace the lamp and the lamp ballast board using ONLY Sony Parts.lamp A-1606-034B ballast 1-468-798-16 this worked for mine.
