How can I hook these speakers to my laptop? Will this adapter plug into the headphone out from the laptop and give enough sound with the 5.1 speakers since they have their own amplifier?

I have this exact Altec Lansing speaker system and I'm currently just using it with my Dell computer. But, I know you don't have to install these speakers to any high powered receiver for good sound quality. The subwoofer has two separate 200 watt RMS combined amplifiers built in for it's single knob controlled dual 6.5" bass drivers and 2-way magnetically shielded satellites, which are amplified together by any source that has an analog or digital volume control. The speakers act as a preamp receiver to any volume or frequency tone level controlled audio source. These input sources can also equalize the speakers receiving input signal for bass, treble or mid-range adjustments. You only need to obtain the proper adapter to hook up all the speakers to your desired component or device. Besides a computer, for example a TV with a variable audio out function or a mp3 player will work. The adapter that i am referring to is similar to what is included with certain 5.1 Logitech brand computer and multimedia speakers specifying gaming console and TV connecting. It has all three color coded 1/8" connector inputs on one end and RCA jack outputs on the other. This can be purchased more easily online then offline at stores such as Ebay for a fairly inexpensive price. However this adapter will not decode true 5.1 surround, but instead give a 5 channel stereo effect. I guess if one was looking for an inexpensive alternative solution to purchasing traditional high end home entertainment audio equipment, the ADA 995s are one of few computer speaker models in my book that can do a decent job.

Altec Lansing ADA995. One day the subwoofer emitted a high-pitched noise. No changes. Disconnected system completely, switched on and a loud hum came from the sub-woofer. Any ideas as to the fault?

A constant low hum is a sign of a power supply issue. You need to check the capacitors that filter the ripple current and you need to check the diodes that convert ac to dc

Ive got these speakers and a real high pitch noice just started coming out of them

hello, This can due to loose connection in the stereo cable (broken wire). and also do you have earth wired to the system or the output device? This is how to check a broken wire, just simply remove the stereo jack coming from you device or PC. make sure you remove both ends, see whether the sound is gone. if you don't have a earth wired, please use a proper three pin plug. if this doesn't work, you have problem with the sound amplifier inside the sub-woofer.. you need a repair :(

Connect Altec Lansing ADA745 to HD TV RCA output for home theater

It won't work like this due to this being a computer only speaker system. It requires the drivers to work with a computer & a Home theater does not recognize the format. Sorry.

My philips dvd player 5.1 have female ports at back side for audio but i have the sound system of LG which has simple naked wire to connect .

Philips DVP 3256 has 6 outputs which takes in RCA connectors
Altec lansing VS3251 has 3 STEREO outputs.
Buy 3 nos of STEREO (female) to RCA (male) cables
1. Connect the Altec's green wire to first stereo-to-RCA cable. RCA ends to DVP 3256's Front left and Front right
2. Connect the Altec's black wire to second stereo-to-RCA cable. RCA ends to DVP 3256's Rear left and Rear right
3. Connect the Altec's orange wire to third stereo-to-RCA cable. RCA ends to DVP 3256's Centre/Sub woofer. Interchange RCA ends if the Subwoofer sounds dull.

Good Luck

Output board for Altec Lansing ADA995

I had the same problem. One day I heard two pops and the speaker, including the power light, were dead. Neither Dell nor Altec Lansing support them. They're throw-aways, unless you know a genius electronics technician.
