I ACCIDENTALLY LEFT MY MACHINE ON OVERNIGHT; THE LIGHT BULB AT LEAST. I SMELLED THE HEAT, LIKE AN ELECTRICAL OVERHEATING, FROM THE MACHINE, NOT KNOWING IF IT WAS THE LIGHT BULB OR WHAT THAT OVERHEATED. I HAVE HAD THIS MACHINE FOR ABOUT 15 YEARS OR SO AND IT HAS BEEN GREAT. AFTER NOTICING THE SMELL, I UNPLUGGED THE MACHINE, THEN PLUGGED IT ALL BACK IN TURNED IT ON, AND IT SEEMS TO WORK FINE, BUT I THINK I STILL SMELL THE ELECTRIC "HEAT" SMELL. I HOPE THAT IF I GIVE IT AN OILING WITH 3 IN 1 OIL, IT WILL BE FINE. IT HAS NEVER BEEN SERVICED OR OILED IN THESE YEARS AND SOMETIMES I BELIEVE A LITTLE TLC CAN BRING THINGS BACK. PLEASE HELP ME FIND OUT WHERE AND HOW MUCH OIL EACH LOCATION NEEDS. THANKS.
Oiling after something overheated isn't the solution. It may be needed due to the age of the machine, but not until you locate what exactly is making the smell, which may be the plastic near the bulb. I would take the cover off and sniff around to locate where the smell is coming from before oiling.

I looked at the basic manual for your machine here: http://www.singerco.com/accessories/manuals.html (type the model number in the manual search box) and it doesn't show exactly where to oil. If you can get a small can of light oil with a fine spout (like 3 in 1 or similar) then just put a tiny drop of oil on each pivot and spindle. You should be able to see where there was once oil before. Use only a tiny amount or it will make a mess.

To oil machine.....Remove the bobbin case.Snap the two retaining arms outwards.Remove the hook race cover (circular ring ) and the hook ( half semi circular) and clean with a soft cloth.Lubricate right hand side wall ( 1-2 drops of oil) turn hand wheel a few times until the hook race is in the left position...replace hook..replace hook race cover ( smooth end to the bottom) and snap back the two hook retaining arms and insert bobbin case and bobbin.

It would be wise to have the machine cleaned & serviced. Do you have a manual for it? Did it come with oil at one time? I found a free manual at

You have to register (free)...choose to skip the popups (2)...and you can save the manual to your hard drive.
I checked the manual...you don't need to oil the machine...but page 61-63 shows cleaning...and it's basic. You take the two screws from the throat plate, remove the bobbin case & brush the inside of the machine bed out...I use a small artists plastic bristle brush, or a small childs tooth brush.

If it smells like it's burning, I would take it apart and make sure no small parts have melted or burned before oiling it.
