Cutter spins freely

with trimmers , there is a shaft or as in a bent shaft a cable that has square drives and ends
these can become oval or break off if continual heavy loads are applied to the cutter head
next there is a centrifugal clutch at the top of the shaft and if continually used in heavy work that clutch will wear out and not grip sufficiently to drive the shaft
most cutter heads do not suffer problems other than to get loose and work down the tube thereby allowing the square drives to part

Do you mean replacing the cutter head drive belt?

With power off start the ribbed belt on the motor pulley, insert allen wrench into cutter head shaft. slowly rotate cutter head while feeding belt onto cutter head pulley. While rotating head, alternate between pulleys feeding it on one rib at a time. Softening the belt in hot water is NOT necessary to install the belt in this fashion.

Maybe the cutter head has come loose from the shaft. make sure the head is engaged to the drive tube properly

Sounds like the starter winding is bad.
The cutter disc is welded directly to motor shaft. So is the allen wrench fitting.
So if disc rotates freely, then you should be able to feel the allan wrench fitting rotate too.
Use broomstick instead of hand down disposal.
If motor hums and cutter disc does not spin, but cutter disc can be moved freely, then disposal needs to be replaced.
I wish they made repairable motors so that metal and copper doesn't get thrown into the scrap recycle metal bin.

You're a bit vague in your problem description here, but I'm assuming you mean that when you give your machine gas that the cutting head will not turn. First I would check the cutter head to be sure that no trash has wound itself around the shaft preventing the head to turn...if that is not the problem turn the cutter head by hand and check to see that the bearing inside the cutter head has not seized, it should turn freely with no noise....if no joy check the cable which runs through the shaft from the engine to the cutter head it may be broken or frayed, also check to see that there are no problems with the clutch (broken springs, broken pads, or a broken key) that should do it ...hope this helps...;-D

The vibration generally comes from the rotation of the motor, and the cutter head. The faster it spins the greater the vibration.

When the engine was running there was no drive to the cutter head. It appeared that the bearing at the bottom of the flexible drive shaft had worn away from the three crimped marks in the exterior drive tube and slipped down, thus the flexible drive shaft inside the main tube was not reaching the cutter head. I made up an exterior tube that just fitted over the main drive tube. I Drilled a 6mm hole through the exterior tube and the main drive tube into the worn bronze bearing. I then brazed a 6 mm nut onto the exterior tube and screwed a 6 mm bolt and lock nut right into the bearing inside the main drive tube. This stopped the bearing moving down and away from the interior flexible drive. The trimmer then worked as it should do. Good Luck, Tony Hillyard, Pleinesa Oeuvres, France

Hi, I have a Ryobi brush cutter and the engine has a tendency to move up and down the shaft. It also rotates around the shaft

Remove the cutting attachment, insert a screwdriver in to the shaft receptor and it should operate smooth with a slight bit of friction. if not then check the blade bolts and make sure the blades move freely. Lubricate the blades and the gearbox regularly. If the attachment end is good then turn the driveshaft by hand (with attachment still off shaft). If this too moves freely then go to the clutch.
