Check the motor carbon brushes, remove the back cover and check for broken or disconnected wires. Using a multi meter check the main cable for continuity from wall plug to the speed control board. That will be the black wire and the white wire at the bottom on one side of the control plate. After that check fields for continuity, that will be between the 2 wires on the bottom on the other side of the control plate and the brass insert inside the brush holders. One of the wires will be a circuit through the fields to one of the brush holders.

Have a kitchenaid stand mixer Model # KP26N9XER the attachment hub is not turning correctly it only turns a liitle at a time with a thumping sound. Opened up looked at the gears and their are bits of metal...

Obtain a copy of the Repair Part List for your model from Kitchenaid.com
Download the Service Manual :

It is not exactly for your model but you can learn a lot from it.
Open up your mixer. Get rid of all the grease. Replace the Worm Gear.
Use fresh Kitchenaid Food Grade Grease on all gears.

Caution: Do not use a screwdriver to pry out the Planetary Assembly.

My kitchenaid mixer seems to have dropped down to low in the bowl

Tip the mixer up and look for a screw on the hinge underneath the top part. Turn this screw counterclockwise about 2 turns and the paddle will clear the bototm of the bowl.

I have a Kitchenaid Professional 5 Plus Mixer beaters won't turn

It sounds like it has been overloaded and the worm gear has been stripped. You will need to take the head apart to confirm this.

Are attachments for a KitchenAid K5 compatible with the K55?

That would be incorrect. If the attachment is for a hobart kitchenaid mixer then it will fit all models of kitchenaid mixers including the brand new pro series because the attachment port and drive gear has not been changes since 1925 or 6 when it was first introduce by the Hobart company.
