When i switch on my nikon d40 an error message "Error. Press shutter release button again" appears on the lcd. even after pressing the shutter, it does not get to display any picture. kindly help
I had the same error message, the camera is less then a year old, however, I was taking up to 800 pictires every weekend of my kids soccer games, then a 6 month trip to the Pursian Gulf, that is when it started, I got back home, took it right in, and one year later after a few visits and calls trying to find out where my camera was, I finally got an answer back, they said I needed a new shutter which will cost $300, They said I should just by a new body for $400. What Nikon does is set that error message to pop up at about 35000 shutter releases, and you can't do a thing about it, once they hooked my camera up to thier system the said I had over 36000 shutter releases, where the average person takes 10000 a year and they want you to replace the body every 3 years....so before buying any camera, always check out how many shutter releases you can get when you buy a camera

The Nikon D40 and D40x are cheaply made cameras, and looking inside confirms the build quality just is' nt there. The shutter will fail at or about a tenth of what the Dx2 will.Probably around 35,000 actuations more or less.A tempory fix can be acheived by fairly compentant person, lubricating the shutter gears in some cases, but as to how long that will last?
My daughter was playing around and my Nikon D40x fell from the top of a fully extended tripod. I freaked!
I got: ERROR Press shutter release button again.
It took one good picture, then the error message persisted and would not take another, despite multiple presses of the shutter button. I removed the lens and found the mirror 'half cocked.' I turned the power on and repeatedly pressed the shutter button, then it started working! Whew! Dodged a bullet.
Good luck,

Same thing has happened to me, only bottom half of the picture displayed and same message comes up. It looks like my best bet is to talk to Nikon about it. Thank you.
The D40X Owner's Manual (page 112) suggests to "consult with Nikon-authoprized service representative". I've had the same problem, and exchanged the camera for a new one (I just bought it).

same thing with my D40
Hi,
Asimialr problem here, when I attempt to take a photo the message "Error - press shutter release again". but no picture is taken.
This repeatedly happens with no sign of correction.
Any advise please
only bottom half of picture is displayed,
I had the same trouble. Basically, should ask service person or department to fix it. However, I tried to fix by myself. The process is that disassemble the bottom case and back panel by removing more than 10 screws, and check the connection of flex cables and connectors. In my case, fortunately, could fix this phenomena. This should be one of typical problems in digital SLR. But, this is not always best solution. The everything depends on your responsibility.

I got the D40x for Christmas and now I have the same error message, press release button...doesnt help.
Could someone from Nikon please respond what to do? Do I need to
exchange the camera? It seemed to work ok for a while but now its doing
it everytime.
for some reason my camera tells me i have a error with the suhutter and i follow what it tells me to do but it stays the same
"error.press shutter relaese button"
what is it?
My D40s error is sporatic. If I change modes it sometimes starts to work properly. I just purchased this yesterday at a Pawn shop (no refunds). I don't get the Half-Picture others discribed. Mine just doesn't take a picture at all and shows the error message.
I have the exact problem...Help!!
