Slide the latch in the center of the battery cover toward the front of the lens, then flip open the cover. It's hinged toward the center of the body, so it flips open in that direction.
There's an illustration in the "Preparations" section of the Basic manual (page 5 in my copy). If you need manuals, you can download them from http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support/consumer/digital_cameras/powershot_a_series/powershot_a630#BrochuresAndManuals
This is an old A70, but the way it's done is very similar as I don't think this has changed much over the years. It's a pin design that you have to push out with a stiff unbent paperclip. You push in on the side with the smaller hole. To access the pin you'll need to remove the front and back case covers. See the following:
There is a pin that holds the battery door down, it might be removable without taking the case apart, other wise split the case and remove the pin and put the new door. http://www.darntoothysam.com/servlet/the-1176/Canon-PowerShot-A75-Digital/Detail has a battery door for you if you need it.
You can probably pick up a "broken" A520 on Ebay for $20 or less and use the parts from it. There are always some listed, but there are a few bidders who are in business picking up these cameras and "fixing" them to sell again. Good luck.
