Check your manual for instructions about this type of problem. Are you using the ink cartridges meant for your printer? Sometimes using refillable cartridges instead of the manufacturer's cartridges can cause the printer to still think the cartridges are empty, and display an 'on-screen' message that they need to be replaced, which could stop the printer from engaging. I have a Canon Pixma printer, installed refillable cartridges, and now the unit displays a 'cartridges are empty' message on PC screen; but the printer still works. The system just recently went into a non-printable mode displaying a more convincing message that the black cartridge is EMPTY, and completely stopped printing. The solution to this: press and hold the Stop/Reset button for about five seconds, and it overrode the issue and started printing. Moral of the story, maybe its best to just buy the manufacturer's printer cartridges.

HP Color LaserJet 2600n Printer - Installing Print Cartridges
When a print cartridge approaches the end of useful life, the control panel displays a message
recommending that to order a replacement. The printer can continue to print using the current print
cartridge until the control panel displays a message instructing to replace the cartridge.
The printer uses four colors and has a different print cartridge for each color: black (K), cyan (C),
magenta (M), and yellow (Y).
Replace a print cartridge when the printer control panel displays one of the following messages:
Replace yellow cartridge, Replace magenta cartridge, Replace cyan cartridge, Replace black
cartridge.
The control panel display also indicates the color that should be replaced (unless a
genuine HP cartridge is not currently installed).
Change the print cartridge
Turn off the printer.
Open the front door.
CAUTION:
Do not place anything on the transfer belt (ETB), which is located on the
inside of the front door.
Remove the used print cartridge from the printer.
Remove the new print cartridge from the bag. Place the used print cartridge in the bag for
recycling.
Grasp both sides of the print cartridge by the blue handles and distribute the toner by gently
rocking the print cartridge from front to back.
CAUTION:
Do not touch the shutter or the surface of the roller.
Remove the orange shipping locks and the orange shipping tape from the new print cartridge.
Discard the shipping tape and shipping locks according to local regulations.
Align the print cartridge with the tracks inside the printer, and using the handles, insert the print
cartridge until it is firmly seated.
Firmly close the front door.
Turn on the printer. After a short time, the control panel should display Ready.
NOTE:
If a cartridge is in the wrong slot or is the wrong type for the printer, the control
panel will display one of the following messages: Incorrect yellow, Incorrect magenta,
Incorrect cyan, Incorrect black.
Installation is complete. Place the used print cartridge in the box in which the new cartridge
arrived. See the enclosed recycling guide for recycling instructions.
If a non-HP print cartridge is in the printer, check the printer control panel for further instructions.
NOTE:
When replacing or changing a black print cartridge, a cleaning page will
automatically print. This helps prevent speckles on the front or back of printed documents.
A cleaning page can also be generated using the control panel or the HP Toolbox.
common problem on the hp lj 3800, you'll notice if you shine a torch in the area where you found the broken pieces of plastic, there will be some more, it is this which is stopping the toner cartridge from sitting properly in the printer. Don't worry about the broken plastic the printer will still work ok.
The following error message appears on the color graphics display after you insert a cartridge: Remove and Check Print Cartridges . The printer will not print. The message does not specify which cartridge has caused the error.
Solution
This error message indicates that the printer cannot determine which cartridge is causing the error. Follow the steps below to solve the problem.
Remove the color cartridge from the left stall (which has a blue latch) and refasten the latch. Leave the other cartridge in place.
Close the printer, wait 10 to 15 seconds, then look at the LCD display.
If the LCD display reads Insert Color Cartridge in Left Stall , the color cartridge may be causing the problem. Follow the steps below:
Clean the color cartridge contacts.
Reinsert the color cartridge into the carriage and close the blue latch.
Close the printer and wait 10 to 15 seconds.
If the LCD display reads Remove and Check Print Cartridges , replace the color cartridge.
OR
If the LCD display reads Remove and Check Print Cartridges , follow the steps below:
Reinsert the color cartridge.
Remove the black or photo cartridge, depending on which one is installed in the right stall. The right stall has the gray latch. Be sure to refasten the latch on the empty stall.
Clean the black or photo cartridge contacts.
Reinsert the black or photo cartridge.
Close the printer and wait 10 to 15 seconds.
If the LCD display reads Remove and Check Print Cartridges , replace the black or photo cartridge.
Remove and then reinsert the cartridge indicated in the error message.
If the error is still displayed, clean the contacts.
If the error message is Error. Remove and Check Black or Photo Cartridge , the following steps may help:
Remove both cartridges, lower the latches, and close the printer access door.
Turn off the unit by pressing the On button on the front panel. Wait for the printer to completely shut down.
Turn the printer back on by pressing the On button.
When the message display reads Insert Print Cartridges , open the access door and replace the cartridges.
If neither of the steps above fixed the problem, either the cartridge or the printer is faulty
1. Press Stop. 2. If the display highlight "Resume". Press the OK (Check Button).
The display will tell you that a Non-HP Cartridge is installed and Economode is Disabled. At least, you can now print. The display will show back again to "Ready".
HI there have you tried the toner cartridge as this could also cause this problem? Also change the transfer roller and are the bands going from left to right or from up to down. If the bands are left to right change both if up to down more likely to be the toner cartridge.
