On a desktop it's easy to replace the sound card. Remove the power cord, open the case then purchase a PCI Sound card that will fit into one of the PCI Slots. You present sound card might be what is called an on board sound card (which is built into the motherboard). You won't touch the onboard sound card, you will simply add a pci sound card.
It's either your sound card is defective or you are not using the correct sound card device driver. You must state the brand/model of your sound card if this a extension card or state your motherboard model if the sound card is on board. If your unit is branded, you should be able to download this from the manufacturer's website.
If your sound card is defective, just replace the sound card. If its on board the motherboard, disable it from the BIOS and buy an extension card.

This can happen for several reasons. I am guessing that you have the sound card and driver software installed correctly.
Many times this is caused by Windows not using the new card as the default Sound card. Since you have not mentioned what operating system you are using and didnt mention if you have an onboard sound card with the new card, take a look at the instructions on the page below.
