Actually, the disconnect has TWO o-rings = one to seal it to the tank:

Needed only if there's a leak between the disconnect and the tank.

Kinda hard to see in this photo, but look close down inside.
Also, when reconnecting fuel line, put a dab/drop of oil on the male fitting (too hard to do the female fitting, oil doesn't like to run UP-hill).
This will make the fitting go together easier and lube the o-ring to help prevent cutting it.
Also, it helps to oil the o-ring to help install it into the disconnect and the oil left on it will help as mentioned above.
