Question about HP No 60 Black Ink Cartridge
My HP 60 black print cartridge prints black shadows (perhaps smudge) that cannot read at all while the color one HP 61 is ok and clear. I can't tell if it is the ink (I refill at Costco once), or the printhead that is damaged. I aligned, cleaned the heads, changed the papers, etc. The black ink prints the same while the color is fine. I sought advice from a computer clinic and the guy said he is not familiar with printers. HE suggested the salesman and the only thing he said was to buy a new one. Other stores(including stores that sell ink and printers/calculators) say they don't know but better buy a new printer. I was wondering if it is just the cartridge. IF I buy a new cartridge, would it fix it? The guy who sells new print cartridges says second hand refills are not recommended because he said the ink could explode and you end up with a mess to clean. I read somewhere else on the web that this is not true. Can you tell me from looking at the scanned paper if indeed the problem is the cartridge ink refilled from Costco or my printer is indeed ready for retirement. I have a HP deskjet 1055 which I read online that it should have been a good reliable model for basic printing and should have lasted for 3+years. While I bought it over 4 years, I didn't open it right away but started using it since 2013.
End of life.
buy a real laser jet like hp1102w.
inkjets stink, imo

Try cleaning the head of the cartrige with alcohol and a Q-tip, if this doesn't help you may have to buy a new one. Cartriges can dry up if they haven't been used for a while. Even though you refilled it, there could be some dry ink stuck in the head. Hold the Qtip with alcohol on the head for a bit and let it dry, reinstall it and then try printing again.

SOURCE: refilled cartridge not printing
Try to cartridge manually ,please follow the instructions :
# Hold the cartridge upside down, with the bar-code label facing you and take a damp paper towel.
# Use the towel to wipe the printhead of the cartridge on the bottom (where the ink comes out). Wipe the printhead horizontally in one direction only (left to right).
# Continue doing this until it looks clean.
# Then dab the cartridge on the towel to make sure the ink is flowing.
# Next, look inside the printer and locate the carrier that holds ink cartridges. Caution: Make sure the cartridges are not installed at this point.
1. Look for a shiny piece of metal underneath the contacts at the back of the carrier.
2. Take a damp cotton swab (use water only!) and wipe along the bottom of the shiny metal piece. Note: You may need more than one swab.
# Reinstall the cartridges, making sure you snap them correctly into the printer.

SOURCE: I ran out of ink
You have used either the wrong type of ink or you refilled the cartridges incorrectly - the result was that the ink spilled over on the cartridge contacts and messed them up.
Take the cartridges out, unplug the printer and using a damp q-tip gently and thoroughly clean all the contacts on the carriage. Then buy a new set of remanufactured cartridges like
put them in and run several cleaning and alignment tests. That should be enough to fix it.

Depends if you are printing pictures from either memory card or directly from camera or from the computer.
If you are printing from the computer, you need to go to start -> printers and faxes -> right click printer, printing preferences or such and find paper size setting.
If you are printing from camera, memory card that is connected to the printer directly then you need to see the paper size settings on the machine.
