FreeAgent Pro USB broken -- need data from Momentus drive

Free Agent USB port broke off. Momentus 640 inside is just fine. How can I get my data without buying another Free Agent, opening it, and swapping old drive?

Momentus is a SATA drive, so you can put it in any PC that has SATA bus to access the drive.
If you can borrow a SATA to USB dock, you can put it in the dock and plug the dock to USB port on a computer to get your data out the drive.
One example for the USB dock is EZ-dock and you can search on Internet for the picture.

SOURCE: Segate UBS hard drive with broken USB port

Solution:

i) i would wisely suggest you not to open the compartment of harddisk, try taking it to nearest repair centre since these part are very delicate(like they have delicated soldering ...or components....)

i would suggest not messup with the broken parts and loose your whole harddisk ..............

Hi there,

Yes you can just take the hard drive out of the case, can use it with any other case, you can also just put it inside your computer and connect it to the sata cable :)

Heres a case you could use for your drive... Click Here

Many thanks

SOURCE: How do I open the case for repair? I do not want to go to a service facility?

Hi,

Just tore one apart for a data recovery a couple days ago, just a personal recommendation though, These cases are horribly designed, personally I would rather buy a simple case like a nexstar, then remove the drive and move it to the new case.

I'll leave that decision up to you, but you'll see what I mean once you have this one open.

PS, working from memory,

First pry the to halves of the stand apart, it's just snapped together.

Second remove the three screws from the upper half of the stand

Third remove the two tiny screws from the bottom of the main body of the case.

Now, the FUN part, grab 3 wide flat screwdrivers and 3 long screwdrivers(no matter which kind).

Move along the back of the drive(cabling side) prying the two sides apart along the seam. Leave one of the screwdrivers set in the gap to prevent it from snapping shut,

Do the same with both sides

Now you have a choice, if you're taking my recommendation and bought a new enclosure, put on your shoes and at least one glove.... Grab the top, step into the gap in the back and pull hard.

When you hear the satisfying SNAP and stumble backwards it is open.

If you're still planning on fixing the thing, pry up a bit and look past the actual drive you will see three retainers at the front(wedged edge) use the three long screwdrivers to force the center one forward and to pull the to outside ones toward the back(I'm still missing about 3mm of skin on one finger a week later from trying this method). Keep at it till you get the timing right or decide to try it my way ;)

Once you have it open by either method, remove the HDD LED lead at the bottom of the drive from the drive. Pull the drive out and unscrew the on the corner with the USB(under the rubber stopper).

Now you have access and can saulder away at will.

Hope this helps FixYa, lemme know which method you choose and how it goes.

If you cannot get the USB port fixed you can take the drive out of the inclosure and install it as a second drive in another computer that has SATA capability to get the data off of it. You can always put it back in if you can get the enclosure repaired.

MY Seagate Free Agent Pro 750GB External Hard drive is no longer registering on my computer. It's only about 1/3 full and I need to recover the data. The software on my computer does not detect a free...

Sounds like the enclosure has a problem. If this is one of those free agent go flex drives with the removable USB to Sata interface you might try getting another drive like it and borrow the interface from that drive when you need to use this one. That's something I have to do now because one of my interfaces died also.

HOW TO PARTITION FREE AGENT 500 HARD DISK. i HAVE NO PRIOR EXPERIENCE AND WOULD LIKE TO ENSURE EXISTING DATA IN FREE AGENT REMAINS INTACT. pLEASE ADVISE

First, copy all of the data from the drive to another as a backup.

Now the drive already has a partition or you would not be able to store data on it. Therefore, you could only be speaking about dividing it into multiple partitions.

Therefore you delete the exisiting partition and then create smaller partitions. In Windows you will be limited to 4-partitions.

I hope this helps.

Problem

Hi Ryan,

I decided that retrieving my data was more important that the seagate warranty and i was not prepared to send the free agent overseas with the data still on it so i removed the hard drive from the freeagent case (case now stuffed) and put the hard drive in an "off the self" hard drive enclosure". All my data was there. It is still working fine. Two big lessons for me - moving files from my lap top to the external drive is not back up and external hard drives can be fragile, best not move them around like a library book. From my low tech view the circuit board on the freeagents is flawed.

Installation issue - Not recognizing

hmm, no problem plugging in either side, just be sure to do the power cable first. What's doing the beep, beep?

Found a guy who had similar prob, here was his solution:
Go to Control Panel. Click on Device Manager.
Check to see if FreeAgent is shown as a disk drive.
If not, check the device list for any Free Agent device, double click and check driver. No driver installed? Update does not work? On the driver tab….click uninstall device.
Shut down computer. Unplug Free agent USB and power at the drive.
Reboot computer. As it is rebooting, plug in the power cord. Wait a minute or two….then plug in USB cord.

Windows will “found new device” ….. Just let the computer complete the reboot.
Then go to the device manager. Chances are you will find Free Agent in the drives….and in the USB list of devices. Open windows explorer….and you should see you Free Agent as a drive.
Windows will ask you to install manufacturer disk. You have no disk…non needed. Windows has installed the device. Just click on close. I you keep getting windows wants to install device…..ignore it. You can click on “don’t ask again”. (That is if your Free Agent drive is showing in the device manager as a disk…and in windows explorer….along with your other drive or drives.)
If at some later time….your Free Agent drive does not appear….repeat the steps as listed above.
(You may think it is not working….or that it has gone bad. Try this before you try to return.)
Seagate Tools…the new version….does not recognize to diagnose the Free Agent….
I have not tried Seagate Tools after getting the computer to recognize the drive.
I am surprised Seagate does not provide a Tool to recognize their own drives…and install and/or test Free Agent.

This does work for me with Vista. Thought I had lost the drive…. Seagate should provide a patch or a drive that Windows will recognize when you get the “found new hardware” and Windows asks you to insert manufacturer’s installation disk. I do not understand why that is not already there….a driver file for Free Agent...that Windows would install.

I did not buy Pro….because I did not need the backup software. I wonder if those who bought Pro are having these problems.
