First try clicking on your desktop, then Go menu (at the top of the screen), then Utilities, then double-click Disk Utility. Select your hard drive on the left, then you should be in the First Aid tab/pill on the right, then click the "Repair Disk Permissions" button (and restart for good measure when it's done). If it the only app that does this, maybe delete it and get the newest version?
Troubleshooting can be tedious and not usually one question/one answer; perhaps the easiest path to your fix is to backup your data (use Time Machine or just copy what you want to keep; if you don't have a drive, spend the $100 via Amazon slash dp slash B00CGUMS48).
Once you have your data, clean slate your Mac (boot to the system DVD or USB that came with your machine; or, you can just get Maverick (which you can download, but not install (leave in Applications), then connect a 8GB USB stick (Amazon B00DYQYJ3Q) that *doesn't* have data that your care about, then run a command in Terminal: sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/THENAMEOFYOURUSBSTICKHERE --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app --nointeraction).
Hopefully makes sense, and clean slate may not fix (but should, just install the faulty app and run it); so, that would mean something like faulty memory (where a strong program might dip deep enough to manifest), but clean slate is a wonderful thing.
