SOURCE: Problem getting J5780 to recognize that cartrige door is shut
Is this a BRAND NEW printer? Just setting it up, just took out of the box?
If so double-check that you have removed all the packing/shipping tape pieces, plasic guards, retaining pieces .. that is what is sounds like
SOURCE: my hp j5780 all in one printer is saying 'close
I was having this problem as well. HP has a tutorial on this problem:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&cc=us&docname=c01050739&dlc=en&product=3301296
However this document stopped just short of solving my problem. When I got to step 3, I
found that the metal lever referenced in the document was missing from
my printer. I have no idea what happened to it. This metal lever, when
present, depresses a contact switch when the cover closes and permits
the printer to function. If the metal lever is absent, the contact
switch is not depressed and the printer believes the cover is still
open.
However, the instructions don't say what to do when the
metal lever is missing ... other than service the printer.
HP
technical support was no help. They advised me to buy a new printer.
However, I discovered a work around: I unscrewed the two screws in the
top of the cover and placed a dab of sticky tack on the contact switch.
Then I put a carefully folded square of aluminum foil atop the sticky
tack. When I screwed the cover back down, this arrangement pushed down
on the contact switch and the printer resumed function.
Hope this information helps you.
1 Turn on the HP Officejet, and then lift open the print-carriage access door.
The print carriage moves into view.
2 After the carriage stops moving, push down on the top of the print
cartridge to release it, and then pull it toward you out of its slot.
Note: It is normal to see ink buildup in the print cartridge slots.

3 Remove the new print cartridge from its packaging and, being careful to
touch only the black plastic, gently remove the pink tape by using the pull
tab.
Caution! Do not touch the copper contacts or ink nozzles.
Once you have removed the plastic tape, install the print cartridge
immediately to prevent the ink from drying in the nozzles.
4 Hold the black print cartridge with the HP label on top. Slide the print
cartridge at a slight angle into the right side of the print carriage.
Press firmly until the print cartridge snaps into place.
Caution! Do not attempt to push the cartridge straight into the slot.
It must slide in at a slight angle.
5 Hold the tri-color print cartridge with the HP label on top. Slide the print
cartridge at a slight angle into the left side of the print carriage.
Press firmly until the print cartridge snaps into place.
Caution! Do not attempt to push the cartridge straight into the slot.
It must slide in at a slight angle.
Note: You must install both print cartridges in order for your HP Officejet to
work.
