NO OTA channels

You need an over the air antennae like the ones below, a subscription to a cable company, access to internet channels like Roku, Amazon Prime or Netflix. It depends on the make and model of the set what its capabilities are.

Hi Loretta,
The reason you aren't getting any channels to work on this TV is because it has an analog tuner. Now a days most channels are being broadcast in digital format and the TV needs to have a digital tuner.
In order to get the antenna to work on this TV, you will need to have an OTA converter that will receive the digital channels and send the signal in analog format to your LC_20AV1U.

No, the Ematic AT103B is an over-the-air digital ATSC tuner and will also can convert the digital signal to analog NTSC for older TV tuners. It will not work with any cable service and is for "cord-cutters". The AT103B requires an antenna to receive your local OTA channels. Depending on where you live, you may get some channels with an indoor antenna. You will get better reception with an outdoor antenna. The Ematic set top box does provide an HD signal output and a DVR (time-shift function) so it is more advanced than the first generation OTA converter boxes. The original (available with the government coupon) converter boxes only gave an SD output.

(antennaweb.org gives a very conservative list of available channels but assumes an external antenna. tvfool.com lists the channels that are likely to be received with a variety of antenna strengths. An antenna signal amplifier can improve the reception. (Digital stations will not be seen if the tuner can't lock onto the signal.) However, when the amplifier fails, you may find some channels will not be received at all.)

If you are in the US, you will need a digital decoder box along with a digital antenna. You set has an analog tuner installed and is no longer compatible with broadcast signals, thus the need for the digital decoder box. Although the channels are digital, they will not be HD; your set is not capable of handing HD resolutions. Thus, you will only get SD broadcast channels. That will limit you to what you can watch as many broadcasters have gone full HD, while others still broadcast the 480i signal as well.

HD is pretty critical and if a indoor antenna do not expect much or anything for that matter.

HDTV indicates the number of lines that are shown by the TV. (HD means that at least 720 lines can be displayed in a given picture.) To receive OTA signals, you need an ATSC tuner (digital) of sufficient power (with a clear path to the transmitter) these days. The RCA D52W20 was released in 2002 and only has an NTSC (analog tuner). You will need a digital-to-analog converter to receive OTA TV (unless any low power analog stations remain in your area).

Please note that the basic digital-to-analog converters that were available with the government coupon back in 2009 were SD (480i lines of pixels used) units. HD d-t-a converters exist but are more expensive.

(the phrase "digital antenna" is meaningless; check with tvfool.com or antennaweb.org for the direction of local transmitters. TVfool.com will give more information on the type of antenna (indoor, outdoor, amplifier) that you will need to receive channels in your area. Antennaweb assumes an external antenna but is very conservative in the stations that it will indicate that you can receive. Antennas are given a color rating based on how far away the transmitter can be to get a watchable signal. Since digital signals are either enough for the tuner to interpret or you get a "no signal" message, you often need a stronger signal than was needed to receive a watchable analog channel.)

Unfortunately, you need a set-top box. The Hitachi 65F59 has an ATSC (digital OTA) and NTSC (analog) tuner. It doesn't have a clear-QAM (unencrypted digital cable) tuner.

There are a few DVR set-top boxes with QAM tuners that you can buy separately. (You will need to make sure a given model is compatible with your service. FIOS uses a different option on the Cable Card than other providers.) Alternatively, you can get a cable box from your company.

If you want OTA HD, you will need to determine the correct antenna for your area and the direction to the transmitters. (External antennas pick up more stations. In some areas amplification may be needed to get a good signal.) See antennaweb.org or tvfool.com for searches on the appropriate antenna to get a signal and where to point the antenna. Antennaweb assumes an external antenna but is very conservative in the received channel list. You would need to set the TV signal input to Air and rescan for channels if you choose to go with the OTA signal.

the frequency catcher of the antenna may be weaker then required.to receive the digital channels u can attach a network booster which will solve the problem.

If your set does not have an ATSC tuner, for HD, then you need to be using a suitably equipped STB.

Your satellite STB - box - should take in OTA channels and display them as part of its normal operation, tho. It takes in the antenna signal from your roof antenna and displays the HD version of your OTA channels, if it is an HD STB, along with the HD channels it gets from the satellite overhead.

This television has an extremely weak tuner. It is very sensitive to both ghosting (multipath) and weak signal conditions, which cause it's digital decoder to "error out". Coupled with this is the decoder's long set-up time (time to actually begin a decoded video stream after signal is selected)and you find that every time the decoder loses sync it takes several seconds to reestablish normal decoding. The net result is the possiblity that the tuner will be continually restarting and never display anything. An extremely directional antenna may help. Otherwise, find a good external tuner box and use that.
