Sounds like the LCD ribbon cable is not seated properly in the connector. Did you unlock the cable before disconnecting the old one and then lock down the new one? Try taking it apart and putting it back in again.
Is there any damage to the ribbon cable or the gold contacts at the end of the cable? If so, the LCD is ruined and not useable.
If you like we offer an LCD installation for only $25 if you already have the LCD. Google search "digital camera parts", we are first on the list: Darntoothysam com

It seems you have a false contact in the upper LCD screen, its flat ribbon cable or the connector at the main board.
It is necessary to open it and check it.
It is fairly easy to do it, but if the camera has a warranty, I do recommend you to make it valid.
If does not have warranty, then you may try in do it yourself if you have some experience and skills to fix electronic devices, or pay to have it done.
Best regards,

See this link. The symptoms you describe indicate that the image sensor (CCD) has failed. Canon will repair this at no cost, regardless of warranty status. Contact them as shown if you are in the US. Contact your regional Canon service facility if not.
