Go to the website for the manufacture of your computer. Look around until you find the driver or support option. sometimes you can put the serial number in directly. I would recommend that option. then select the operating system and download the audio driver

HP dv9728cl need windows xp driver for Conexant high Definiation SmartAudio 221

I understand that you have downgraded the operating system from Vista to XP and you are unable to install Audio drivers in your Notebook.

To isolate the issue please install following UAA drivers and Audio drivers.

Here is the weblink to install UAA drivers.

ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp32501-33000/sp32646.exe

Please do not click on the link. Copy and paste it in a new Internet Explorer window.

After installing UAA drivers restart the Notebook and then install Audio drivers.

Here is the weblink to install Audio drivers.

ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp34001-34500/sp34200.exe

After installing Audio drivers restart the Notebook again to get the changes effect.

I hope this will work.
