Computer doesn't recognize hard drive

1. Try a different USB port. If other ports recognize it, then the original port is fried. 2. Try a different computer. If the other computer does not recognize it, then your flash drive is damaged.

Before return it try with another PC then let we know, or let the seller check it for you: you don't have to pay nothing.

Try the drive on another computer. If it is recognized there, you might be looking at a larger issue on your Mac. If it doesn't, the GoFlex's drive or boards may have failed.

it is a known issue that these particular drives sometimes don't get recognized by the Operating System, after coming out of Sleep, Stand By, or Hibernation.
Simply try to disconnect and reconnect the drive again in the USB port, if this doesn't work then, Disconnect it from the USB and connect it to the Firewire. if this doesn't work then, Restart the computer.
It should solve the problem.

Sinice it is recognized at home it probably has a problem with the drive letter. Check to see if the drive letter it uses at home is used by another device at work. If so you may be able to change the drive letter for it by going to Device Manager and changing the drive letter for the usb.

You may have to assign a drive letter to it.

I can only assume the hardrive is defective.

Until you put an Operating System, Windows, Linux etc, on the formatted drive, it will NOT recognize the drive, it will not recognize anything...

Does the external drive work when connected to some _other_ computer? (Friend? Office? Home?)

It could be a failure either in the "hardware" inside the external-case (the USB adapter & interface)
or in the disk-drive "inside" the external-case.

So, a qualified technician can open the external drive, remove the disk-drive, and connect it directly to a computer, to see if the files can be "directly" read from the disk-drive.

If not, then you should search online for a "data recovery" service -- they are expensive, but they physically repair a damaged disk-drive, just long-enough to copy your data to another disk-drive.

hey im the same person who just posted above. i went to WD's website, and it said unplug the hard drive from the computer, and unplug it from the power source. then plug it into the power outlet, wait for it to spin up, then plug it in via USB/Firewire, whatever. it worked for me, so hopefully it will work for you.
