My new Hayward Pool Sand Filter won't backwash.

The filter setting works fine, but when I set the filter to backwash, nothing comes out.

Are you shutting the pump off before you move the selector control?

  • james aurienne May 11, 2010

do you have a top mount hand setting valve that turns to different settings?

Hey!
Mine was doing the same thing. I had the hoses switched up. I had the hose from the pump connected to the port marked RETURN (on the Hayward vari pump valve). Not good! I also had the return line hose (from pool) connected to the port marked pump. It happens! The problem is I tried EVERYTHING ELSE before I found my error. This includes a trip to Leslie's to buy a brand new multi port valve (good thing they have a return policy) AND changing out my relatively new sand in the filter AND taking apart the vertical tube and each individual flange at the bottom to clean them out. Please check your hoses FIRST if it won't backwash! By the way...I've been a pool owner for 17 years. I think my experience worked against me since I didn't recheck my work at setup.
NOTE:
It might SEEM like your filter is working because you get suction at the skimmer and water rushing thru the return line into the pool. It's not working if your lines are backwards like mine were! My water started turning green!

David. As you said, your years of experience worked against as it did me. I was sure I tried switching hoses and the problem seemed to worsen. I was at my wit's end when I found your "fix". So I said, "okay, dummy" go see if it's the 'ol hose switch and it was. Thank you for your illuminating solution. I think this year, I'll label the ports!

Have you ever had the top valve apart? If so, the postion of the inside diverter was not replaced correctly. Make sure the solid portion of the diverter lines up with the 'Closed" port on the valve. Once this is lined up, everything else will line back up into the correct position.

David,
Thanks!!! That was exactly what my problem was. Had our pool for eleven years now and always had a picture to look at. lost the picture over the winter and rushing to get it open for the Fourth of July, I hooked them up backwards. Thanks for the solution.

Hayward sand filter allowing dirty water to come through

1) Make sure that you have thoroughly backwashed the sand.
2) Make sure your chemical balances are correct
3) Remove filter canister top valve and insure that it was properly seated on the filters canisters center pipe.
4) Remove all sand from the filter canister
4) Clean all components thoroughly
5) Check for cracked laterals or plumbing
6) Repair or replace any bad or missing components
7) Reassemble

Tip: carefully use a rubber mallet to seat the canister valve by lightly tapping on and about the circumference of the valves seat.

Hope this helps,

Hayward sand filter

Reference your pressure gauge as the 12:00 position. Going clockwise-
12:00 is Filter, normal running position
2:00 is Waste, water goes from pool and exits the waste line, bypassing filter.
4:00 is Closed, used only when servicing equipment
6:00 is Backwash, reverses water through the filter and goes out the waste line.
8:00 is Recirculate, water bypasses filter and returns to pool.
10:00 is Rinse, water goes through filter and exits to waste line, used briefly after backwashing to clear sediment from filter.
Note that the "pointer," not the handle that you grab, indicates which setting you are on.

When filter is set on

The valve on top of the filter has several settings. What is yours set on. If it is set on Backwash or Rinse or Waste, it will allow the pump to send water out the drain. If you have new sand, you probably should run on the Rinse setting for awhile, then switch to Filter.

My hayward sand filter is running but not filtering or doing anything pressure on gauge is not moving and i checked for clogs nothing can someone help me out or let me know where to start.

Is the pool pump working? If not then the filter won't work and no pressure will show pressure.
If the pump runs, is it flowing water through the filter? If the backwash valve is not set to "FILTER" then it will not filter. If it is not working yet then please send me the results and I will try to figure it out. Thank you.

I put my Hayward ST180T on rinse to vacuum the pool and I ended up with sand in the pool what happen?

You are using the wrong setting to vacuum. This type of pool filter should be set to "filter" for normal vacuuming or to "waste" for heavy loads. The "rinse" setting makes sure that all of the dirty water is out of your filter after backwashing.

No green comes out in backwash

Alge will quit often go through filter so first you need to kill the alge by super chlornateing the pool. You can take a water sampel to your pool store and give them the size of your pool, they can test your water, for nothing in most cases and recomend what you will need for this. Then you can start cleaning the mess up as the dead alge will turn to dirt. This dirt will be very fine and may go through your filter also so a cup full of D.E. in your skimmer after backwashing will usually coat the top of your sand and catch much finer dust and dirt. Do this as you clean the pool and backwash 1-2 times daily till clean. Follow all directions given to you at store to kill the alge first, this is very importiant.

I have a hayward s200 sand filter. When I vacuum, i backwash but dirty water doesnt seem to backwash out, just clean water. When I turn filter on small amounts of dirt you cant see come out of jets and re...

Are you using the rinse setting for a few seconds following the backwash? If not, once you finish washing, stop the pump, change the valce to rinse, then run it about 3 to 5 seconds. Shut down then switch to filter and the particles should stop coming back to the pool.

No water coming out when I backwash. I cleaned

water level must be about the discharge (eyeball) in the pool to back wash. Check the hose connections to make sure that hoses off the the filer head are going to the right place Look for the words "Pump" , "pool" and "waste" molded into the valve. I've seen it a number of times where "Pump" and "pool" were connected the wrong way.
