Only sews in reverse - Singer 5050 Mechanical Sewing Machine

hi there.
go to this forum and have a read up on what might be wrong.
Looking for advice my sewing machine is sewing backwards sewing
or this one.

If this machine has a mechanical lever or button it may be internal parts have broken and need to be replaced. this is a common issue with lots of machines. The machine breaks when in reverse and will only sew in reverse. Please have a professional look at the machine and make a repair if necessary.

Depends on the make & model of your machine. Would be best to consult the owner's manual. Mechanical and computerized machines also vary. Mechanical machines usually have a stitch length lever that, when pushed all the way up, will reverse stitch, or there is a button usually marked with an R or an arrow. Computerized machines usually have a button marked by a U-shaped arrow.

Of course, if you have a vintage sewing machine, it may not even have a reverse stitch. Instead, to sew in reverse, one would have to sink the needle into the fabric, raise the presser foot and swivel the fabric 180 degrees, drop the presser foot and stitch.

To find a copy of the owner's manual, search the internet for:

Maybe there's a problem with the reverse and forward button.

I am having the same problem. Initially it did sew forward, but now only sews in reverse. The large grey lever on the right front of the machine should make it sew in reverse only as long as it is held down, but mine sews in reverse only. Hmmmm....think there are many people with this problem.

You need to take the machine in for adjustment, on that model you cannot do it yourself

sometimes it is the spring, open the machine up and take a look at the spring, it may be broken or stretched. It should be located right where the reverse lever is, inside.

Be sure you are in the correct stitch pattern...if you are on a buttonhole stitch or a stretch stitch it normal for the machine to sew backwards. Be sure your length is to the right of 0 and not in a strtch stitch model or buttonhole mode.

The reverse button is attached to link that moves a lever to make the machine sew in reverse. The lever is spring loaded so it returns to forward sewing when the button is released. Either the spring has come off or there is a bind in the lever(oil it). In order to solve the problem, the covers must be removed.
